i have seen these mark up pretty much often in countries where cash is still reigning (and sea is one of them) and cc not popular (as major part of the poopulation can't afford them) similar situation in those establishments where prices are low. different story when you go to mall, stores (ie the rings of the globalization chain) but there their prices have space enough to accomodate the cc share.

on foreigh currcny transactions they earn extra through the excahgen rate, not always the best or the result of a formula that generates from the official xy rate plus a % (currency fee).

cashing through atm can result in extra costs as everybody has to make money from the service they give you.

i do not understand people protesting for these fees as they are the only incomes for the banks when they hand out cash to you.

i am not defending them, but there is a worldwide system on atm, hard and software. we might want to acknowledge it has costs.

I keep the RA number in my CP. I used it recently in Boracay when a Steakhouse tried to hit me with a 5% surcharge on my bill.

I argued with the waitress about how it was illegal and then asked to speak to the manager. She said he wasn't in.

So then I asked for the bill to show both the actual charge and the credit card surcharge on my bill.

She went away and suddenly the owner appeared (European nationality) asking why I wanted this and generally appeared a bit aggressive.

I reminded him about RA 7394 and how it was illegal and that I was going to report him to the DTI showing them my bill and the credit card slip. I also showed him the phone number in my CP (+63 2 7513330).

I also said it will cost you 300, 000 php and possibly your license will be revoked.

He told the girl to take the card and don't worry about the credit card surcharge.

I reported him anyway because I know he was going to continue to rip-off unsuspecting customers (especially foreigners). I have since done the same thing again at Alona Beach in Bohol when another foreigner restaurant owner tried to rip me off in the same way. The DTI responded next day by personal telephone to my complaint and thanked me and told me that they were contacting the businesses concerned

Too bad about the 1-2% +.39 cents or whatever the charge is. That's part of operating costs like rent, utilities, wages, etc. If you don't like it, don't do business, or don't accept CCs. Only going to take 2-3G, but there is the card if I need it. That should more than do it for 15 days, the room can go on the card.

Clearly an intimidation thing. I don't like bullies. Asked him if he wanted to go into the canal behind him, the thing was dropped. Probably better to have walked away, but I was only young and was pretty annoyed about that clown.

Found out later that the US shore patrol did their patrols with M16s, pistols AND night sticks. Our shore patrol, who went with the US patrol, went with clean shoes. I remember being told the yanks thinking our blokes were either very tough or brave. No, I think it was just that our navy didn't hand out small arms. LOL.

They can charge bank fees at ATMs (auto teller machines) as long as they are declared BEFORE you continue with the transaction. But that is more often when you use the ATM of a different bank than the one you have the account with.

I use my CC often, but don't see vender fees included. The price is the same regardless of whether it is cash, credit card or debit card.

If I knew a vender was charging those fees I simply wouldn't go back.

In Olongapo, I did many walking shore patrols without sidearm, just the stick. The guys who drove vehicles down the road had weapons and we were supposed to give thumbs up when we saw them. We gave thumbs down when we needed assistance. When we saw drunks asleep at their table, were taught to remove all glasses, try to wake them, and them step back. I used to chat up the lookers and promise to meet up when I finished my SP. They always waited for me. A guy in uniform is hard to resist.

But when an ATM becomes profitable, something's wrong. My bank is already making good money from keeping my money in their accounts (its a good chunk of coin, and they are loaning it out to make profit). I certainly don't want them making extra profit off of giving me some of my money from time to time. When I use their ATM, they have paid for it with my money. It helps them by my not utilizing the in-bank, well-paid tellers. The machine's costs: purchase, maintenance, replenishment, etc. Are eaten by the bank, which I'm already paying for by depositing my coin. They are welcome.

When I use the blue machine in Manila, the ATM there will charge me $5 (p200) for any transaction, which is profitable for the owner of the machine. There's a machine in Robinson's Malate that is used non-stop from the mall's opening to closing, easily 200 customers / day. That's easily p41000 / day to the owner of a machine. In addition, my bank will also charge me p200 ($5) for the transaction. Is there a cost? Yes, approximately 35 cents is charged back to the authorizing bank for the transaction. Is there profit? Yes, do the math, over $4. To suggest my bank should make a profit when I use an out-of-network machine is a bit offensive to the customer.

I second to this. P200 per transaction is a lot of fee. They also limit you about p8000 / day. To me it is ridicilous.

And they got to be ready at any time as they can't predict your visits to the ATM. ATM must create profits too, otherwise why to run them? We need to understand that banks are no charity organizations. Whether we like it or not. The solution is going around with a big wallet.

In fact, on my last trip, one girl actually told me to take someone else she knew on stage instead b/c she said the other girl needed the money to send home. Either that or she wasn't really into me and use it as an excuse, but either way, I took someone else on stage instead.

But on the other hand, if you took the same girl out for multiple nites and she got a little attach to you then yes, she will get jealous and it WILL SHOW even if you didn't take a girl from same bar but she saw you with someone else.

Truth is, the banks already make money everytime you use your Credit card at home and they profit even more if used oversea as they can and will charge you anywhere from 1-3% more on any oversea transactions. Even banks that "claim' they don't charge a foreign fee are BS as it's a mandatory 1% off the top. Then they also make money with ATM withdraws with multiple ways, transaction fee for not using own bank networks, foreign exchange fees etc etc etc.

With any place at home or oversea, I actually don't mind too much if merchant tells me that they will charge extra for using the card as some don't like to absorb the CC charges themselves. At least then I have a choice of using the card or not.

What I hate are the ones that don't tell you they charge extra and do it anyway and you find out after the transaction had gone thru.

You should be able to find Carousel at the top end of Fields. If memory serves me, it is just about 2 doors up from Dollhouse and maybe next to Atlantis. I had a favorite there for the last couple of years (a sweetheart) and I would say that there were some others in there that had strong potential. Had a message from my "sweetheart" just this past week that she is married now and in Australia. A bargirls dream come true.

Over the years, I have certainly barfined multiple girls over multiple visits, sometimes with the original girls blessing, sometimes by accident and who knows what the other times were about. AT least once because I was confused and looking for a great gal (it wasn't obvious to me that she wasn't there the next time) instead chatted with a gal that looked pretty much the same and then ended up with her for the evening. The error was determined later in bed.

The thing that always amazes me is that it seems that these girls have memories that must last forever. I walked into Angel Witch one night with a friend, my buddies gf and my girlfriend for the evening. We had some drinks and left. A couple of days later I was in there and looking for my evenings entertainment and one of the girls asks " where is your gf?" So it is easy to get tagged as a butterfly even when you are just barhopping.

Another gal I know. Probably remembers all of my barfines if they ever showed up for breakfast with our group in the morning or if they had met in some other manner.

I try to explain that I am not a butterfly (paro-paro) and when I am asked my name. Today I am Ed, tomorrow I am Frank, the day after I am George. So I can say each person I am is only barfineing one girls always. LOL.
