And like Badin says, you can download Google offline maps on your smartphone. Pick a region on the map, and download. It's really handy I find. I've used it as car navigation last trip when I found out.

Costs only a few Euro / Dollars. (less than the price of one taxi ride Darmstadt Hbf. Sharks).

Well, I got a new TomTom app and what happend was I downloaded NL and De maps separately, and there was a disconnect for directions. Luckily I found out about Gmaps offline as I downloaded the Roermond / Bruggen region to get directions across the boarder.
After using Google offline, that will be my main map source. It's the best maps IMO. With POI info there as well. And you can always delete and redownload as updates.
