It's the time to switch to new modern digital imaging.This is my recommendation because it's features and affordables.
1.Nikon ~ S3 with 6.1Mb (Nikkor ED Lens)
2.Canon ~ Powershot S60 with 8.0MB (Digic II imaging processor)
3.Sony ~ Cyber-Shot DSC-T9/B with 6.1Mb (Carl Zeiss Vario Tessar)

You might also want to look at:
1. Nikon P1 (8Mp wi-fi Nikkor ED lens)
2. Sony DSC-N1 (8Mp Carl Zeiss lens 3" screen)
Bottom line camera is better than phone camera. I'm using a Nikon 5200 (very good macro mode) it's old but I'm waiting for the next generation as I already have a 5Mp. Plus I need a camera with an underwater casing. Good luck with your choices. It's better for our hobby to carry a compact camera so you have no problems carrying it around. Have fun!

I have more then a basic idea how to use cameras and have a Cannon EOS 350D, however its not very portable and very intimidating to some of the girls. Thus I appreciate the suggestions the other members have made concerning what to getas a more portable version. Do you have any hidden skills or knowledge of cameras that you would like to share?

Errr... all this talks of different cameras for capturing our images lands on very sophisticated and bulky cameras......
Me, if the FL/ML/fish allows me to take picture, I use my hand SE K750i phone..... 2MP, with flash, macro and night mode.... max resolution: 1632X1224..... can fill whole monitor with a really big abalone..... hoho
Good enuff la for this type of imaging..... small enuff to post here (need to reduce if captured on max res.....) and more importantly, is extremely portable and convienent.....
Cant be carrying a bulky camera to HC/MP ma...... haha
My 2 cents... and pls dont flame me.... get any brand megapixel cameraphone (2MP if can).....
I thought camera phones do not provide good resolution pictures?
Is 2 mpixels enough for a beginner?

Frankly bro, I have to disagree with you. The phone camera has limited functionality that can easily be beaten by a good compact. Any decent RM1000+ compact digital will have multiple modes (including close up) and a much more powerful flash for dim lighting. What is generally forgotten is also the size of the sensor. Phone cameras have very small sensors compared to compact cameras - just as compacts have smaller sensors to SLRs (which is why serious photographers still take a 6Mp SLR over an 8Mp compact). This affects picture quality even when you can only show 640x480. Incidentally for Rm1000+, you're already gettting 4-5Mp. Please note the colour and clarity of my pics;).

Smart Phone nowaday's got capabilities of shooting a picture.But you need to know that the resolutions provided not the same as digital camera's.The pixel and the quality never will be the same.I also have a K750i.But when shooting at a decent lighting,the picture quality drop.

2mp cam is good in digital format. so for mobile and internet/email is fine. For printing it will be grainy for regular 4R prints. check with fisherman he seems to be into photography.

Yeah agreed with that,i still have the previous model of digital camera such as Canon EOS 20D-SLR (8.1Mp-Powered by Digic II) and Olympus C370 (3.2Mp).But now i used the sleek Nikon S1 (5.1Mp) for travelling.
