Crowded weekend at Rattlesnake, couldn't even move, so headed over to this Fili joint, but it was also packed. Didn't have much time, so did a ST with a 28-year old called Sheila. Myself, I always enjoyed flying solo. As far as girls staring, never bothered me. I never really noticed, more interested in a) finding a good table, b) not bumping into anyone, c) flagging down a waitress for that first drink (though being a regular, they just brought me one without asking).

What I found is that a number of girls won't intrude when they see you're busy talking with "friends", but when you're by yourself, a good excuse to come over and see if you want company. A steady stream to select from. You just want to make sure it's a quickly moving stream. You want to keep that landing slot open. Really not a problem when the band's playing - I'd just point their direction, say "music", and turn back to the band, not turning back to see what happened to her. Worked.

If you give out mixed signals, unintentionally, then the girl thinks you might be a potential client, so she'll continue to try. So if you don't want [u]HER[/u] company, I found that a polite "No thank you" most often worked. If she continued her spiel, I'd just say a bit more forcefully,"I said NO thank you". As for poking and prodding, THAT I NEVER tolerated. I'd turn and say,"I don't touch you, [b]DON'T[/b] touch me." You'd be surprised how fast word gets around that that's a no-no with you. Last resort, a simple "If you continue to bother me, I'll call the manager over." The potential of getting banned from your preferred place of work really IS the trump card. And it's no bluff. Just ask the waitress to speak with the manager, the girl will afterburner out of there, and when the manager does come over, just say how much you enjoy the band.

Nice thing about the Seaview, the band is entertainment enough on their own, at least for me, and trying to carry on a conversation with someone when they're playing a bit difficult; I'd quickly get tired of shouting. During the breaks, I'd spend my time watching the girls dance, easy to see who was there.

Bottom line, it's no different than the businessmen along the streets of old Bur Dubai, say by the Astoria hotel toward the museum. You walk that street, any number will act like old [u]friends[/u], sticking out their hand to shake yours. They all rely on your social upbringing. You just need to develop that oblivious stare.

Certainly nothing wrong with sharing a table with a stranger, but not required to ensure you have some space to yourself. Simple and direct will provide the space you desire, especially as word is passed.
