True Story:

The other night I am walking down the alley and Yolanda yells at me to stop. I've chatted with her before and I actually think she is fun to talk to. Anyway the begging does get annoying after a while. HOWEVER this night she threw me for a loop.

She came at me with a little book and pen in her hand. ASKING FOR JOKES! She told me she needed to tell the hotel a joke so they would let her back into my room. If this was a hustle I didn't care. I caved in anyway because it was original.

So I dug deep into the archives and remembered a joke I used to tell years ago:

" How do you kiss a girl with bad breath? ".

You hold your nose and SPIT in her mouth. (drum roll symbols crashing crowd rolling on the floor with laughter).

We both had a big laugh. Her toothless mouth was wide open like if someone had placed a tire jack between her lips.

It was a funny moment in the zona.

Has anyone eaten at pampas in zona Rio?. I'm a meat lover and want to try. Pampas in San Diego sux, but it looks like the one in Tijuana gets good reviews.

Go before 6 pm, I think it's 6 but it might be some other cutoff time, and the prices are like 25% cheaper.

I usually go back to Cali Sunday morning and holy shit, I don't ever think it was so busy. 45 minute wait in the Ready Lane at 9:00 am. It's usually 10-25 for me.

They said it was the best steak they ever had, so I want to take the civvie I met a couple of weeks to dine there but can't find that post anymore. When I ask Hispanics amigos about it they all say pampas, pampas is Brazilian not Argentinian.

I've eaten at a few high end restaurants around town and I can tell you *Applebees had the best tasting ribs or steak. In general red meat just isn't the thing to order in Tijuana.

The good news is the rest of the meat offerings are very decent.

It's in Zona Rio. The taxis should know how to get there.

The rib eye and porter house I had was dry, tough, tasteless. It's similar to and not any better than steaks served at the Sonora Grill. Their salads and side dishes were small and forgettable. Dinner with wine costed me about $40 per head.

Compare that to restaurants in BS As that serve their cheaper sirloin steaks for $5 dinners, that are far juicier, tastier and full of that delicious beef aroma.

Cheripan's beef is not Argentinian by far, not even Costco's quality. I don't know where they get their beef from, but I kept being reminded of the old donkeys on Revo. Hehehe.

The meats tend to vary in taste and quality. I found the Spanish Chorizo good, the sirloin OK, others hit and miss. Believe it or not the grilled pineapple was delicious. Others in the party liked the chicharron. There are so many types of meat that it's hard to keep track. The price is reasonable. The salad bar is large, but not that great by USA standards. I will say that the place is always busy and very popular. Ask the waiter, if you still have room, for the "crepe suzette" cart for dessert. I can't remember the exact name of it, but that'll get you close. I think I have some pix around here somewhere. I'll see about posting them.

The Argentinian place is probably Cheripan. I've not been but heard good things. Another I've heard about, but not been to, is Asadero Argentino. It's in Otay and seems to be pretty popular.

Being of Mexican decent and a former pro Chef, Mexicans tend to over cook their meat. The local palate prefer their meat very well done, think Tacos. It is very rare, no pun intended that you will ever see a Mexican order a steak rare or even medium rare. Also, they tend to prefer the thinner cuts like flank or round. Tijuana seems to be evolving offering cuts like Ribeye New York Porterhouse ETC. The key with beef is aging it properly and also that the cows are grass fed not corn fed. Argentina beef is superior to you. S beef for mainly that reason alone among many other. Husbandry of Animals is a lot different in other parts of the world VS the you. S assembly factory line beef production. Mexico in general raises cattle a little more ethically than the USA I have had good and bad experiences with beef in Mexico it just depends on where and who produced it.

El Grill has good steaks, American style but pricely. Mexico is not the place to go for a good steak.

But, most Mexicans have no basis for comparison, so if you take them to a nice steak place they will like it. Both Cheripan and Asadero Argentino get good Yelp and Tripadvisor reviews.

But my question is how badly do you want to impress her? If you really want to impress her, PM me for some suggestions. If it's not that sort of thing, I'm sure you can't go wrong with Cheripan. However, let me suggest something a bit more out of the ordinary. Chiki Jai is a nice little tapas place on Revu that's been there for decades. Oddly, very few chicas I know have ever been there. It always gets good reviews with the chicas I take there, and the food is reasonably priced.

I was an exchange student in kobe Japan for a year and taught english for another year in osaka. I don't think any beef will compare to the meat from the kansai area. I'm not trying to impress her with wealth by taking her to some place expensive nor enough to become my GF. Maybe just enough to be friends with benefits? Just want to go to a nice place with great atmosphere and great food. We will try chiki jai or cheripan tues night?

In Tijuana, forget it, although there are a select few that I would goto for good steak. Argentina across from the Grande Hotel is a very good place. As for the cow, I was told in Hermosillo that they only keep the good cows and ship the mediocre ones to other cities.
