Probability of HIV Transmission
I ran across this showing probability of transmission from Thai prostitutes to military conscripts was estimated at .056 per contact, after correcting for error in self-reporting. This is very high -- a 1 out of 18 chance an HIV positive hooker will infect the male after a single contact:

Any idea what's going on here? I've read (and believe) the probability of female to male transmission is much lower, say 1/500 or 1/1000 per contact, in Europe and the U.S. But you'd think that there would be enough people in the U.S. or Europe that have the factors that contribute to HIV transmission, like STD's, uncircumisized penises, etc., so that you wouldn't see THAT big of a difference.
