Yes, I will visit "Sambava". I know you also recommended "Morandava and Antalaha". That's for sure. I am not totally convinced on the $50 SUV and driver rental yet. Maybe if they keep the driver and give me a GPS and a more reasonable rate.

BTW, I googled Madagascar women photos and found some showing topless women net fishing on a nice secluded beach from any tourism! In fact no men anywhere around! Dose anyone have an idea where that might be? In the background I see lots of living huts / shacks. Looks like a place I'll be visiting.

Rent a car w / o driver difficult to get and if then only in Tana. 1-way rent not possible. A small 4WD will set you back 60. 80-US$ + gasoline: calculate for 1000 Km to use 140 l = 300-US$ in addition. Having a car a week will set you back easy 1000-US$ in total.

Alternative: Rent a motobike, Honda Transalp, for 40-EU / day. Takes you anywhere.

GPS: only a simple map software is existing. No details and most desert pathes missing. But you can follow the stars.

I have used google maps with offline maps for android. The only difficulties was at masoala national park since no road there but else-ware was fine. I had 3 spare batteries for my sony Xperia. Offline Navigation is not supported yet but you can see your location on google maps. Its also helpful to download compass App.

Meeting new friends is easy, even in air Mada flights. I got a good seat so mongering was Inevitable.

In Morandava as with any other town, walking at night is not going to happen just because you have no place to go for. Its bloody dark, no shops no people. If there is a single club at weekend just take one of the hotel stuff as I did in Antalaha. Small towns is about getting the girls in daytime.

Hotels don't check I'd in morondava, sambava and Antalaha. This is not true for the cities which law is enforced. South of Morondava is not safe and very poor. If you want to experience the soute just fly to morondava for 3 days and you will understand what I meant by wild. I liked the photos sessions I did in morondava exotic beach.

Madagascar can be very poor and unpleasant as much as amazing and unforgettable its depend where you go. For me the only route is from Tamateve to Antalaha while both nature and monering is superb. Here you will feel like an explorer in a pristine environment.

Diego, Toliara and mahajanga are for hard-core mongers mainly residents, far from coconut beach mongering destinations.

That's great to hear about Morondava (love these exotic names). I have it on my list with Sambava and Antalaha and will venture to places NO TOURIST ever sat foot in!

So far I am leaning towards Antalaha based on your reports. It will be my base for a while. And will hire " PAUL" like you've recommended. Please tell me about "PAUL" his help for you, what you judge fair to pay him. Etc.

I am not sure about money exchange in little towns! I have two debit / ATM cards: VISA and MC. And of course, I can bring cash (USD) but for obvious reasons I prefer not to do:

- Do you get a better, similar or worse exchange from ATM withdrawal?

- Which is better: Banks, black market, or those Indian exchange shops?

Going by 4x4 takes all day so I tried the next hope which is Belo-sur-mer but no taxis-brousses and the guy with the pirogue asked for 100US$ One way. I also asked the manager of my hotel but it was hard to get that info even for belo which is the next town.

Eventually I gave up my dream to see the isolated versions of Morondava and went to mahajanga instead. Interesting to note that some destinations require only one ticket (I. E Morondava to mahajanga) , while most of them you will need to buy two separate tickets when Tana is the hub.
