Happened in Centro Cartagena
Did that robbery occur in Cartagena? Do you know of any like that in Cartagena? I would only stay in a place with security.
It happened in Centro, he stayed at a place with no security because he didn't want them constantly asking him for money every time he bring girls in. From the way he explained it, he found the girl over by the Scotia Bank where the bus stops and big Exito. They went back to to his place and they were drinking and doing shots. When he woke up, the girl was gone, his phone was gone, his wallet with all his cards was gone, all his pesos gone, his sneakers and his jerseys gone, even took his cologne jajaja. All he had left was his passport in the safe with $100. He was lucky it happened on his last night there and not his first day. He kind of did it to himself though because he said the place he stayed at had a double cylinder lock so in order to leave the apartment he had to unlock the door from the inside with a key but he would always leave the key inside the lock so he wouldn't loose it and get locked inside.
Experiences differ among mongers
Totally agree with you about the relative trustworthiness of Thais.
As I've already stated, I don't speak Spanish. But then again, I've never got that drunk on a monger trip, that I could not put myself to bed.
Yes there is always a chance you might be robbed down to the chica, and you know someone that happened to. How many people do you know that it hasn't happened to? And what are they going to get? On a good day after I've been to the ATM, maybe $300. By the time I've got home after night out, that might be $150 including the money for the girl. I have an old laptop, my phone, luggage, passport, a 35 year old Seiko watch and Debit card. Robbing me, will not change her way of life. I know you can't factor in the stupidity element, but if the door is opened from the inside, would the girl really think I would not figure out her role in this? But then again, you can never allow for the stupidity of desperation.
All this depends on the Monger and how he moves.
Many of these chicas live day to day. They only care what they can get from the foreigner that day because they know they may never see him again once she leaves the apartment.
So the questions are always the same; Where are you from? Where are you staying? When are you leaving? When the monger gives them answers to those 3 questions the chica can estimate how much money the monger makes that they can afford to travel to their country, how much money the monger is willing to spend to sleep in comfort, and how much time they have to extract resources from the monger.
Similar to Thailand, allot of the girls do not work in the area they live. They will travel in a group 2 - 4 minimum and take the hours long bus ride into Cartagena on Thursday and rent a room together. If 1 girl can get 1 gringo for the day, the room fee is covered. Any additional gringo is profit from there on so if they can do 5 - 6 gringos a day each then leave on Sunday afternoon back to where they are from. Then a chica may not come back for another month because she made so much money. If something goes wrong, by the time the monger wakes up, that girl is long gone and its hard to identify her if they met on the street. Mongers are getting smarter and asking for the Instagram profile just incase something happens they have photos of the girl. At least in Thailand the hotels make the girl leave her ID at the front desk and she cannot get that ID back until the monger gives the front desk the "all clear", they also make copies of her ID just in case something happens to the girl the cops know which monger she went to see so everyone is on their best behavior.
In my experience in Colombia, the hotels and the apartments I've stayed at with security, the girl can just leave, pick up her ID, and be on her way. Security don't call the mongers room to make sure everything is OK for her to leave, or require the monger to physically escort her to the front desk to pick up the ID.
