as the ramen diminished, and as i approached the middle of the bowl, my frenetic pace would likewise diminish. i began to regain my senses again, my self-respect slowly returning. i started to realize that i was being stared at by the other guests. well, at least the ones who had finished their bowls and had the blood-sugar levels to look at me in disgust. the other guests were just fidgeting with their fingers waiting for their bowl, or embarrassing themselves the same way i was. but i started to slow down, the panic of having to get the noodles into me slowly being replaced by a more well-paced appreciation for the flavors.
and as you might predict, as i neared the end of the bowl, my blood sugar level reaching a peak, i began to feel nauseous. the sudden onslaught of carbs had flooded my system with sugar, and my head would begin to feel very light and airy at this point. i never flagged in my desire to consume every last drop of that delicious broth, to nab every little bit of mushroom and celery, but by the time i was scraping the bottom of the bowl, i knew i was done. a second bowl would just never be consumed, absolutely not with the same vigor and delight, and it would probably not even get finished. i was so full, so nauseous, so satiated that i could not even think of another bowl of that stuff. in fact, i needed to get out of that restaurant because the smell pouring from the kitchen was just so damned sickening, it made me want to vomit. and those damned customers slurping and lip-smacking, noodle-broth flying all over their faces and shirts – it made me sick watching them guzzle the food like shameless heathens. i would walk out of that noodle store completely satisfied and overly-satiated, convinced that i would never want to eat noodles again. until the next afternoon at 4pm when the urge returns.

why am i telling you all this? well, the same cyclical pattern of total, unfettered greed > measured appreciation > complete satiation, usually exhibits itself in my mongering trips to thailand. i usually arrive like a starved working man, unable to restrain myself, eager to fuck anything in sight. i sex myself silly for an indeterminate period of time, oblivious to the shame to my character and the filth on my clothing, before the desperate panic subsides. i then have a few days of clarity in which i really appreciate what i am experiencing – a window of enlightened experience, if you will. but this is soon replaced by satiation, after which i begin to get sick of the experience. i start to wonder what else there is in the monger’s experience. do i really want to expend the energy to go out and find yet another girl? a girl who will play yet the same show of money vs. pleasure? who will do yet the same things with me? is it really worth my effort?

Sometimes I think I imagine those insinuations even when they are not there, so strong is the power of society over me. But that hasn't stopped me from doing what must be done.
I flew through Narita, enjoyed the finger sandwiches in the ANA lounge, along with a score of espressos. Appropriately jacked up on caffeine, I worked my ass off for the duration of the layover and the entire 6 hour flight to BKK so that upon landing, I was guilt-free and ready to rumble.
The plane touched down at 10:33pm; Our gate was right next to immigration, so no endless hustling through those long, never-ending corridors in Suvarnabhumi. I whizzed through immigration, grabbed my luggage and scampered through customs, and found my way to the first floor taxi stand. I was sitting in my taxi by 11:05, and at my hotel at exactly 11:35pm. The meter read 238B, plus the 70 in tolls, plus the 50B airport surcharge – you do the math. One hour from touchdown to arrival at the hotel – I think this is only possible if you arrive late at night, as there is no traffic at that time.
I booked half my stay in the Grand Millennium, using [b]that amazingly helpful Wotif post from [u]Barko[/u][/b] in the BKK Hotels thread (once again, many thanks Barko). The hotel looks good, at least so far, although picky Kumbu has found some things to complain about (all minor). I will post a full report in the hotels thread upon my departure. I say 'half my stay' because I want to try different hotels. So I plan to book the last part of my stay in some (yet-to-be-determined) hotel.
I was pretty tired, but since when is that a consideration? I needed me some noodles, metaphorically speaking of course, and so I showered and trotted off towards Soi Cowboy. Arrival time at SC: 1am.
I'm staying with my gf for a few nights in BKK, and looking for suggestions of places to visit in the evening. She is cool about going into gogo bars, but actually they are of course a bit boring for a couple, as not really a place to chat (or eat). So I was thinking about more Thai-oriented clubs, where we can sit and have a drink and some food, watch some entertainment, which doesn't have to be too raunchy (but a few coyote dancers would really help). Doesn't have to be particularly high-end or hi-so, in fact probably more fun if it's not. And neither of us are particularly into dancing the night away, me because of my arthritic limbs and complete absence of musical co-ordination, and her because of her shame at being seen with an arthritic senior...
I went to the Tawandang German Brewery (I think) and that was OK, and still remember the Coliseum with fondness. Suggestions for anything similar (especially with some easy-on-the-eye attractions) would be much appreciated.

i'm not sure why, but i did not explode in anger at her. instead, i pulled the check from the bin, paid the rather-expensive 150b charge with a 100b bill and three 20s. she saw this and screamed into my face for a tip. the tequila was ripe on her breath, and it reminded me a little of the scene from jurassic park when the t-rex blasts the tour group with its earth-shattering roar. i told her to get the check first, to which she was a little peeved. but she heaved herself off my leg and scampered rather light-footedly off to fetch my change.
and i dashed. well, actually, with my one good leg pulling all my weight, my left leg barely moving, i limped off at as rapid a clip as i could manage. she saw me from the cash till and screamed at the injustice of it, but rather than stay there and have a fight (i could argue with her about how she forced herself onto me, punished me, i nearly died, and so she should pay me, but that would be rather pointless). i thought it better to escape.
so no #9 for me tonight, and given the events of the night, it is likely that i will not be returning to suzie wong's.
oh, and one last thing: on the way out, the ladyboy mama san grabbed my elbow and asked me for a tip.
two things i must say. i admit, *some* of the above is slightly embellished for comedic effect. but not much. so, i wasn't really blue in the face, i don't think. and my eyes may not have been cock-eyed, but they were definitely blurred and unfocused. second, this description casts an unfortunately negative light on suzie wong's. this is probably not warranted, although i must say that i have been in there perhaps a dozen times over the last two years and never once have i bar fined anyone. but i still go back...i'm not sure why. nonetheless, it highlights the dangers of the wait staff. while i generally handle myself well, sometimes things can be taken out of your hands. and i am sure there are plenty of other ways that money is extracted from us customers.
so it was now 1:40am, kind of late for soi cowboy. i walked into doll house, and saw three girls on stage and not a single customer. i'd be damned if i was going to be the only guy in the bar at that late hour, so i did an about-turn and walked out to the sound of the girls/waitresses calling after me. i decided that it was too late for the bars in soi cowboy, and decided to walk down sukhumvit to soi 11, in search of climax.
