I spent the night at the Top North Hotel, 400 Baht for fan room with breakfast, hot water and WiFi, very basic place but clean and walking distance to the border crossing.

I couldn’t find anything in the area that looked like a club, a bar or anything that might be P4P.

During the day I did some recon to check out the brothels that are supposed to be behind Wiang Inn but didn’t see anything that had any activity during the daytime. I stayed at the Wang Come Hotel, when I asked the rate she told me 1000 Baht, Wiang Inn was 1800 Baht a night, but when I frowned she offered me a discount of 800 Baht a night with breakfast but there is no internet and it’s totally non-smoking, very nice hotel and the bar street is right behind it.
I tried a few of the places on the bar street but it was always the same thing, talk, buy me a drink, talk, buy me a drink, will you go out with me, no I don’t go out. Now I’ll admit that I’m not a night owl, was there between 9 and 11 or so, so maybe different when it gets later.
Just gave up and called it a night.

for reminding me of the 'hidden' possibilities of Mae Sai. I'm headed there in a couple of weeks for a visa run and shall take some time to re-explore the area!

Does anyone have any experience of getting a train from BKK to Krabi? I'm planning to take the gf there for a couple of days, and she has suggested the o/n train. Sounds fine to me, but would like a private compartment if possible, for obvious reasons.

You can buy a ticket at the station in BKK (Hualamphong), including a bus ticket to Krabi. I tried this but got irritated by the fact that on the bus you end up with a small army of backpackers stopping at two private bus stations between the pickup at the station near Krabi and Krabi town itself. This is especially irritating after not having a great night's sleep and wastes a huge amount of time. There was something seriously wrong with the bus transmission, seats were permanently in recline with what looked like recycled ancient nylon pink underwear around the windows. No one could tell you anything and we had a crowd of know-it-all backpackers bleating on and on throughout the trip. At the second private bus station, they wanted us to pay 300 baht for the trip to ao Nang. Even charged us 20 baht just to go to the centre of Krabi town and you had to pay for using toilet. I did not get to Ao Nang until well after midday (having arrived in Surat Thani at about 6am).

If I were you, I would not buy the bus ticket but get tickets for the night train to Surat Thani and then arrange transport at Surat Thani so you can specify exactly where you want to go. There are a couple of tables and some of the restaurants selling tickets across from where the train stops. Shop around. If you cannot get a ticket to Ao Nang or wherever you want to go, you can get a ticket to the waterfront of Krabi town or the bus station and then get the Saeng Thaw (openbacked truck-bus) to Ao Nang for I think 60 baht.

The difference between the first class and the sleeper is that you get a compartment of two bunks (one above the other) for yourself. Usually they segregate the sexes but you can say it is your wife (lol!) and that should be enough. I also know guys who claim to have had a bit of hanky panky on the sleeper behind the curtains - in fact, one Thai couple shared the lower bunk next to mine but fully clothed. The noise of the train is surely enough to drown out pretty much anything else.

The downside of first class is that it is not available on every train, you are sleeping sideways to the direction of travel and tend to be woken up whenever the train stops (which happens less on the ordinary sleeper as your body is aligned with the direction of travel and your body is not jolted around so much), is still noisy even with the door closed etc.

Whereever you are, you get woken up far too early but that is because the staff need to change the bed around for the next passengers.

The no frills restaurant (open windows therefore noisy) on the train is open until about 10pm and you can get beer there too. Or you can have it served to your seat/bed.

Firstly let me say that you may find more information about Roi Et and Yasothon in the 'Issan' section, which covers those two towns as well as the rest of the Northeastern region.

Secondly, let me say that there are most definitely no BJ bars to be found in towns like Roi-Et or Yasothon. I fear you may be in for a bit of a disappointment. These towns only contain a very tiny minimum of mongering opportunities - you'll be lucky to find a blow job at all in these towns, much less a bar dedicated to their proferrment.

There are good normal massage places all over in Roi-Et, and I think also a few in Yasothon. I can't particularly recommend any, and I suspect that most do not really provide any sex at all.

If you want a 'soapy' massage place, which definitely provides sex, I know only of the one in Roi-Et - at Mai Tai Hotel. So far the authorities have not managed to shut it down, and it still provides the bathtub and (usually rather poor) sex for 1,200-1,700 baht. To be honest I would not recommend visiting Isaan with an eye for mongering, with the possible exception of Udon Thani. Better to either stay in Pattaya, or if you must come up here to this dull area, bring a girl with you.

Take the 24 seats VIP bus at 1600Bt and I guarantee you a much more comfortable trip than in a train. Bus makes one stop at around 11:30pm for 30 minutes and after that it is all the way to Krabi in a 170 degrees reclined and comfortable seat. Book at a travel agency, and ask for pictures of the bus, they will have.

Excuse me for being disputatious, but in my humble opinion the sleeper train is more comfortable than any bus, and the price you mention - 1,600 baht, is more expensive by far than the train. I can't find specifically the price on the Thai Railways website, but I seem to remember paying a little less than 1,000 baht to Hat Yai last year in the second class air-con sleeper, and with that one is sleeping quite flat in a real bed.

If one would spend 1,600 baht to reach Krabi, one might as well fly Air Asia for about 2,000 baht and accomplish the journey in one hour.

The train (private compartment) seems a better option than the bus if one is traveling with company. I would happily do this were it not for the thought of a 2-3 hour bus ride at the other end.

I might bite the bullet and buy air tickets, or revise my travel plans to go somewhere nice that is directly on a rail line.

Oh, so the 1,600 baht bus ticket is a round trip (return) as well? I read that as one way.
