Hotel Copa Linda. It's on N.S. Copacabana and rua Bolivar opposite Roxy Cinema. I think the rates are more like R$50 with R$15 commission to the GDP. Vanity Hotel on N.S. Copacabana and Djalma Ulrich, rates are about R$65. Vanity used to rebate R$10 to the GDPs but I think they discontinued that.
I stayed at the Hotel Copa Linda last time I was in Rio. It was R$100/day (didn't ask about hourly rates). I stopped by Vanity to ask what their daily rates were and he told me R$150. These prices make apartments or the Ibis downtown look even more attractive. This aparthotel might be worth checking out http://www.hotel-rio-de-janeiro.com/hotel349-residencial-apartt/apresentacao They offer free breakfast. However, the last time I wanted to make reservations I was quoted significantly more than the R$110 that the website quotes.

Once when I arrived late in Rio I stayed at Copa Linda for one night. I guess it might be OK (even though expensive) for a short session, but I would never stay there for several days. I hated that place.
At least the room I stayed in was small, no windows, rundown, noisy, lousy AC and an awful plastic covered mattress. :(
Update on Casas de Massagem and Termas in Centro, pricerange R$ 10-85.

Note: I have updated my list of cheap Centro Casas in Rio. Some old casas have moved or closed. I have added a couple of new casas. I guess that the list is useful to many of us. With a few exceptions the other forum members don’t seems to bother to report about new Centro casas. Therefore I didn’t bother to add to many new casas to the list.

All the info and ratings are based on my experiences, in March 2009. Your experience of these casas might be totally different. In these casas the number of girls and the standard can change very quickly. Some casas might also close or move within a short period of time.
I've also made a new updated Centro Map,attached.
Sperto,
Thank you very much for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive and easy-to-understand list, maps and rating system. I have not been to VM yet (as I have been working on my language skills) and this info arms me with all I need. I feel confident in having a great experience there - even with limited working knowledge of the language.
Two questions:
1. I assume it is good to take the subway and walk into VM from the SC Metro station? I plan on going over during the day. Then walk and take the Metro back.
2. What is the best and safest time(s) to experience VM?
Again, thanks for all the great info and advice here.
Hey guys:
I will be making my first voyage to Rio in August plan to stay a month there and then 5 more months up the cast. I rented an apt in Leme which they say is quieter and away from the noise for a good nights sleep. My question is:
I like to work out, use the treadmill etc. Is there a good gym complete with jogging machines etc. in that viccinity meaning coppa, leme. Please let me know the web site and or number and if possible the price.
Thanks guys

You hated it? Me too brother, but both of the people I rent apartments from were full. I think she gave me a "premium" room because it had a window on N.S. and a refrigerator. Even worse than the rooms was the mean ass lady behind the desk and they have a breaker box there where they can just switch your a/c off when they want to.

Let me get something straight. you are going to rio, and you want to know where you can get a treadmill? I have an idea. how about you walk outside by the beach. why would you use a treadmill when you will be on one of the most famous beaches in the world.

Thanks guys
This is the website of a really big gym, BodyTech, on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana: http://www.abodytech.com.br/unidades01.asp?nomeunidade=copacabana.
I haven't been in there but have been told it's really impressive.

Yes, Metro to São Cristóvão and then a short walk to VM. Metro is OK but I prefer to take the bus 455 Meier from Copacabana. Going by metro takes more or less 35 minutes. Taking the bus can take anything between 25-60 minutes. Usually I arrive in 30 minutes when going by bus.
I know that everybody don't share my opinion, but I think VM is perfectly safe. If you go late it's good to take some caution on the way to/and leaving VM.
I think to many mongers give a horror picture of how unsafe VM is. The first time it might seem a bit disturbing, but you'll quickly get used to VM (and love with all of your heart:D).
I guess some people just don't feel comfortable at VM. They "do" VM once just like they do the Sugar Loaf, Cristo and the favela-tour. "Wow, what an awful disgusting place...". No problem at all, we are all different. IMO Rios biggest shithole is called Help. :)

The one on Princesa Isabel on the junction of Copa and Leme may suit you. I always use it. Look for the mini supermarket on the Leme side of the street. Nearby is a car rental. You go up one floor in an apartment block and it overlooks the street. (If you scan the windows of the floors above the street from ground level you can see the gym.)
Web site?? Rock on - they spend your money on equipment, not that highfalutin' internetty stuff ;)
It's not the flashiest of gyms in Copa (there are many) but it has a good number of running machines, treadmills, fixed and free weights etc. There is a studio at the back with classes. You can get the price down by a) not having the use of the studio, b) only using it at off-peak times of c) if you are good at haggling. Prices are on the wall behind the reception (to your right as you come to the top of the stairs).
The trainers are all very friendly and give free help and advice.
Can't remember what I paid but I'll look it up and try to add it to the post.* As with any gym, rates will vary depending on how long you are staying. This one is very reasonable, but they will of course whack it up for anything less than a month. Try to avoid the 'day rate.'
*Seems I paid 93R a month. See here for details. I would add that sometimes the fingerprint scanner (used to admit members) didn't work properly, and occasionally I was asked if I had signed up for the full membership or just off-peak. But there was never any hassle and I never had to produce my receipt. I'd suggest you might want to hang on to your receipt as it's your first visit though.
Yes, Metro to São Cristóvão and then a short walk to VM.
Sperto brings up another place that I think many visitors miss - São Cristóvão. It costs all of R$1 to get in.

I always have gone with a date, but had no trouble hitting up the locals. Dancing skills and Portuguese recommended.

And bring an appetite. The food there is wonderful (and cheap)!

It's a big mostly open-air place. Very laid back and, like most of North Zone, full of ordinary people. Nowhere near the Sao Cristovao metro though - the suburb covers quite a large area and also includes Sao Cristovao park that sometimes has nice exhibitions and a fabulous Temple of Apollo that makes for way cool photos surrounded by a lake. The zoo at the end of the park is a bit scruffy but ok for a place to take a garota that goes all gooey over animals (especially if she's never been to a decent zoo). But if you can dance forro (or especially if you dance forro) then the market is a good bet and it won't even break the bank when you spend money on her.
