As I have always said, if you really want to know how they feel about you then show up without money / or tell them you are not giving them money or gifts.

The building that this person lived in is pretty rundown for those of you who stay at Hotel San francisco it is one block away you will see the building is not nice by any definition. It is basically, a project building that would be on the upper west side of New York with no security surrounded by luxury buildings. Secondly, I have no problem with a person's lifestyle, but he was gay and known to have young gay men over all the time at his apartment. Again, just wanted to provide you more information that is verified by fact. Again, just an update i provide no opinion for this story just giving you more information.

Definitely in Sosua, Boca, the gringo gulch in Costa Rica. All the red light district type areas, I've sensed some resentment for me being there with greater financial resources than them, not everyone but some people. I'm a blue collar guy from the mid west! I resent them for resenting me! LOL! If only they knew how hard I work! But outside the more tourist type areas it's different. People WORK! There not asking for 100 pesos or buy me beer. When they're friendly or helpful it's genuine, they're not expecting anything. Years ago in Colombia, I got my currency confused and overpaid by about 40 bucks. The guy returned the money and explained my mistake. But I think that's less likely to happen in a puta pick up area where 90% of the people are on the hustle. We can't judge a country solely by the areas we monger in.

Personally, I have a house in El Salvador and have travelled there 100's of times. I take the time out to be respectful and to learn the culture however, when I am walking into a Strip club or other bar no one there knows that. They only see me hitting on there woman, throwing money around that they themselves don't have and partying in there "locals" club. So I definitely see your point and agree with you.

When they are yelling gringo go home and other choice words its clear what they are thinking and there perception of a white face in there place of leisure.

Then when you expect the people you are friendly with down there to come to your aid but, instead also team up against you it creates a pretty miserable situation and you can clearly see what even your friends actually think of you. They will always side with there latin brothers, and always just look at you as a gringo with an underlying resentment.

I don't know what the breakdown would be, but I would guess that 90%+ are coming with their girlfriend / fiancee / wife, then you have families in that percentage, and then the remaining 10% might break down as 7% expats or people visiting for business, and the rest would be mongerers. I'm probably off on those numbers, but my point being that a good number of tourists are actually contributing to the culture in my opinion.

Sure I have seen some resentment, but not much. Even in mongering areas. I try my best to speak Spanish even if I struggle, but I find that locals are far more appreciative when you try at least. I don't wear the fanciest of watches when I'm traveling to a nation that has lots of poverty, locals can identify that I'm a foreigner but I don't try or want to stand out. I think we focus a little much on on the financial aspect of resentment from latinos, but this thinking is flawed. There are always going to be people who look at you as a cash machine, and that's unavoidable But what I've found in the DR is that no matter what your situation, people tend to be a bit more positive than parts of the western world, accept life as it is whether they have money or not, and try to make the best of the situation no matter how easy or difficult. I don't know why so many people assume that there is hatred and jealousy for visitors, many people just want to get on with their daily lives and do not care about being angry at a person who is only in their country for a temporary period of time.

And assuming that the other people in there are assuming this about you and viewing you with resentment. What are those other people in there doing? Aren't they doing the same thing you are? So why assume they don't have money to throw around? And are just viewing you negatively and with resentment?

Though I think it's more fucking them for lots of money (at least to the locals) that really bothers them more than "for nothing. " If a young gringo that speaks Spanish is down there trying to pick up girls based on his charm and good looks (which can certainly be done if you have time), I don't think it's that insulting to the locals. But when a dirt-poor man from DR or Colombian sees a Gringo throwing what to him is two week's earnings at a girl for a fuck, that hurts.

Always be nice to the locals and watch what you're doing in these locales. We already have enemies, so it's not a good idea to look for trouble.

Let alone $50-$100 to go upstairs or outside with a chica. They see me and my friends with white faces buying beers, dancing, maybe being a little loud, spending money like it grows on trees and then going to bang their women. I think this is what causes the resentment.

Dominicans are very class conscious. Wealthy Dominicans do not associate with the poor very much. The big happy family stuff is bull shit. Go to the Blue Mall no one in the place has a tan. Blanco Dominicans stay blanco by choice and practice. How Dominicans view us has many answers. The folk we see are envious. We appear to have the world by the balls. We spend more money in a week then they make in six months. Most are hoping for some of the cash will drop there way. I will say I have been a couple places where I did see resentment. Once in a casino and once in a dance club. Both cases guys had been drinking. Watching your ass no matter where you are is required.

If a gringo is spending lots of money he is looked at as a sucker or someone who is contributing to the culture because the local will feel the money is staying in house. Maybe the girl gives the local guy some money, or it goes to the local guys kids so there is no reason for him to feel resentment because he is getting over on the gringo. It's the privileged gringo who feels he is owed the same deal as the local guy that triggers resentment.

Puntz79, if you are trying to incorporate yourself into the culture by learning to speak Spanish, learning their cultural ways, this shouldn't trigger resentment verses a guy who could care less about the culture and just wants to fuck for cheap and go home.

I did not share this before maybe I should have, but have not talked a lot not trying to argue. An interesting thing happen on Conde street a little while ago. I was walking on conde street and a gay black american man was punched in the face by a Dominican man. The Dominican was promptly arrested and I asked one of the touts what was that about. He said the dominican man was very angry that the black man did not pay him for having sex with him. Now, I was not really watching the fight because the black man did not hit back and I am not one to stop and watch, but when I saw the dominican man promptly arrested and he was being led away I had to turn back and ask what was going on. Just thought it very interesting to have a violent Confrontation in the middle of the day on conde street. How can people be so different in there expectations of one another. Just sharing that thought.

SD is coming to be a hot spot for Gay sex tourist. The park near EL Conde is Gay central. There are always several gay guys in Paco / Grands. The police seem to leave them alone and do not hinder. Dominican men do not like or tolerate Malicons. There seems to be violence around gay sporting life styles. There often more gay guys in Pacos then SWs /.
