All,

I will be in Phils in a few days, and for tax reasons have to return for the states at the [b]end[/b] of the month, not earlier. This means I will have to overstay my standard three week visa. I know I can go through the hassle of extending the visa in Manila, but what will they do if I just overstay a few days? In Nepal they just charged you a nominal fine and let you go your way.

My other option is to fly to JKT for a few days, but I already have a flight out of Phils back to the USA, and do not want to complicate things too much...

Your last two post were spot on. It's all about how you carry yourself in the country you are visiting. Unfortunately, many foreigners live up to the expectations of the people of the host country they are visiting by continuously acting in ways that they normally wouldn't act in their on country...VERY STUPID! I'm American and I see it all the time here in Korea. The Koreans expect Americans to act arrogant, bullish and to start trouble when ever they arrive in clubs in large numbers, so they place a lot of clubs and other places off limits to us unless we have a Korean escort. Most of the time, rightfully so. Like I always say, "You can place 40 drunk Koreans on a bus for four hours without having any fights or problems, but take five drunk Americans and place them on the same bus for ten minutes and see what happens." I love my country, but in all fairness my countrymen have caused us to be resented around the world for our arrogant and sometimes childish or brutish behavior. Act like a gentlemen and you'll be treated as such. Once your behind closed doors with the lady of your dreams for that particular evening, you can make all the freaky requests that you like. If she likes you, she'll take you up on them, and then call or text you later for repeated sessions. Again, excellent posts Spam Hog.

If the guy had a brain he would have grabbed some street kid and told him to guard his bike and gave the kid an outlandish tip.

Understand that Filipinos see those of us running the bars and playing with the "Boricut" as jerks, trampling on our own dignity and soiling ourselves with those beneath us. that is one reason they feel no onus about ripping you off if given the chance as you "deserve it". They enjoy making a fool out of you.

This was said to me by a Thai, but you can apply it in any country. Guy was a good friend and a straight shooter, one time he asked me why "We" behaved the way we did, going into bars are getting these low class upcountry Isan peasant girls with "monkey faces" for which we were over charged and made fools of? "Dont you understand is bad for you face?"
Get better class of girl and dont go in such low class bar.

Remember that the system is set up to SERVE you and to PLEASE you. HER JOB, WHOMEVER "SHE" IS IS TO MAKE SURE YOU ARE HAPPY. Anything or anyone that does not is disgarded IMMEDIATELY, no anger, no fuss, smile and demand (Politely) satisfaction and performance especially for anything you have paid for.

BB I read all about that girl and the Sunday feast with the family. Wished the hell it was me in that situation. I would have showed up at the house unannounced (Not bringing anything since I paid for it) with a certain amount of finesse but the firm message being "I dont care how tired YOU are, IM hungry and YOU invited me I paid for this and Im entitled to your hospitality and to be served, so where's my plate please? I would have laid a "mano Po' on grandma and made somebody go fetch something special from the bakery for her and maybe a snort of tanduay special for daddy. In Short, be charming, well mannered and polite win the family over and you trump the little strumpet. Afterwards i would have told her not to call me again, I decided I dont like you, never mind the reason.

Although I would add that we are all the same regardless of nationality and, to a large degree, sex.

Sometimes we seem different but thats due to experiences and environment. If you grow up in the west you have it easier and don't have to hustle much if you don't want to. if you grow up in Asia, you don't have so many safety nets so do have to hustle more to survive.

The guys who complain about the girls they meet; how would YOU behave if you were that girl? How would YOU behave if you were treated as a cheap ***** just to be used?

If YOU were a girl from the provinces of PI, with not much education and with your looks and sex being possibly your greatest assets what would YOU do? Be all meek and just accept your poor situation hoping to meet that knight in shining armour? We all know he doesn't exist!

Hustling is just a part of life. If you're a salesman, have your own business, are self-employed, are trying to scale the corporate ladder, etc. don't you hustle as well?? Does that make you a bad person?

Being wise is essential but being cynical is not.

Expect the worse from someone and they will probably prove you right. Expect the best and they might just justify that expectation.

In my business, when someone thinks I'm hustling them I will get every cent I can from them. Otherwise I'm very fair.

Too many people go around with the attitude that they are victims and are just waiting to be proved right. They don't remember the years of fun and happiness thay got from a marriage but only remember now the messy divorce. And if there were no years of fun and happiness, then you were just acting as a victim and deserve all you got.

Around 50 at a travel agency would get you another month or two, don't waste your precious time running around. You need it to pick the right "melons."

My tiny little piece of advice would be, "never ever overstay in the Philippines"! Believe you me, some of the basically very friendly immigration officers might become very unpleasant when you stay too long in the promised land! That it was just for two short days or so does not really matter!

By the way, extending your visa in Manila is no big deal and certainly no hassle (anymore)! Simply pay the express fee and within 3 hours you have the visa in you passport. Or, go to a travel agency like Columpuss recommends. Maybe your hotel can do the needful as well! But, brother, please play safe and do not invite any useless trouble!

I had been through some doozies, Thai and Filipina as well as others from al lwalks of life, and so had she. She was trying to meet Mr. Right on the chat lines and getting tired of the Yutz parade and guys asking to see her tits. We were introduced by a third party, guy I knew, also married to a Filipina and living in the Phils. It was a casual meeting and we were both only half interested, but we stayed in touch. Interesting to note, our "Romance" started as more of a friendship. I just got into it in another thread for X man who thinks he might have a special one. But some of the deciding factors was she was older (30), life had knocked her around a bit and made her into a somewhat strong woman, never hit me up for money, she was also the most honest person I ever met, that was proven to me many times in different ways, so out of character for me at the time, I was honest back. Refreshing as most Filipina usually told me a sack load of lies, even the "nice" ones, of course I lied right back so there ya go, a good lesson in itself.

Yella man, one rarely sees the Web Scam girls working the Koreans, they aren't fools to part with their money coz sweetie needs tuition, has a sick pig or daddy needs a hemoroid operation. While you are correct about how brustish, silly and childish "we" sometimes act, I find it interesting about using Koreans as an example. In the USA Koreans are known for their upstanding law abiding hard work and integrity. But what I have noticed is that in the Phils, there is a distrubing amount of negative incidents involving Koreano. A local filipino attorney friend of mine claims that 50% of his practise is defending Koreans in court on shoplifting charges and those involved in drunken brawls. A few weeks before Xmas it was all over the news how two Koreans were arrested for strong arm robbing a local Cabbie. Last night Cebu news local reported on the arrest of a Korean national for possession of drugs and three firearms. I can recall several incidents in the news and otherwise of Koreans arrested for illegal recruitment, smuggling of various kinds and other mischief. No I'm not anti Korean but the moral of the story is, I suppose that being a jerk is not limited to westerners. Consider this also. When Westerners are involved in scams, hustles and grifting, it far outweighs any thing these little scheming jezebels come up with to nick you out of a few hundred pesos.

Some of the biggest crooks over here are my fellow Americans, with a goodly showing of Europeans et al thrown in. These are the characters who come up with the phony land swindles, cockeyed investments, selling the non existant bar or business or everyones favorite the so called "treasure hunters" whose primary product is often the infamous "Mindanao lead sandwich" a thin coating of gold over a lead bar "just unearthed" of course. Or the counterfeiters, hang around in a bar long enough you'll meet one a these characters. when they get you, they get you for thousands, not nickle dime stuff.

Compared to these dudes, give me a bar girl who suddenly develops her menses after fining or wants a lavish tip for a lackluster head job anyday.

When I worked in Bangladesh, I became friends with a European who lived there. He then one day (with his mates) tried to pull off a con trick on me (tried to steal money in a very clumsy way).

That's why I say that hustling isn't limited to any particular race or creed, but is just a normal way of life.

Double standard

The guy in the suit robs you out of thousands, he's a good businessman.
The brown girl in AC does it for a few pesos, she's the scum of society.
I often observe this thinking in people, not racism, but human nature.

I traveled quite a bit to poor countries and always am generous and courteous to those around. Soon enough they will give you all the pointers about what to avoid as far as scams. They will watch your back also. The guard in one of the bars always reminded me to put my wallet in my front pocket instead of back. I listen but often disregard its importance until I heard that there is a gang of pick-pocketers roaming a mall in AC and I suddenly remember his words.

Being generous I mean not giving lavish tips and such. This is my gimmick of breaking the ice with people. I usually travel around with a huge bottle of tylenol pain killer, with tooth ache and minor cold are common with people there, these pills are great ambassadors.

Filipinos are friendly and not afraid to ask you for things once they know you. It is a shock for many reserved Westerners. Keep in mind that they don't hate you if you say no. It is as normal to them as Westerners not asking others for things.

Your absolutely right! It seems that some people in general from all countries lose their sense of honesty, integrity, and respect for others when they leave their own countries, and deplane in Manila or wherever else in the Phils. Acting as if none of the rules they have lived by previously apply anymore. I travel there repeatedly to monger and have fun...always watching my back, and never trusting very many people I meet. Fortunately, it has been a recipe for success because I've had no problems with the people, and I have never been scammed by a girl. Of course I get the occasional request for money for the sick family member, rent, food, tuition or whatever else they can think of, but mostly I politely decline to give it to them, while continuing to be the nice guy that I am as I extract myself from the situation. You live, you learn.
