TelCel Unlimited Amigo Plan
Good point about getting a local phone number. I didn't even think about that. What's the best approach to doing that? Once I land at the airport is there somewhere I can buy a local cell phone that will come with some kind of airtime and that will also allow me to download and use whatsapp? Or is there an easier way? Thanks.
Last March I had TelCel in CDMX put a chip in my unlocked phone. The chip with a local number and Amigo Plan (good for 30 days) cost me 150 pesos plus tax. I think 179 pesos total. Unlimited calls in Mexico and to the US. Free and unlimited WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook and Messenger. I only got 150 Mb that were used up immediately with updates because I neglected to make the "WiFi only" setting. I didn't need to buy more Mbs because free WiFi is available everywhere in CDMX and seemingly in GDL. ATM fee structure Changes. Bank of America and Santander in Mexico
Hey everyone!
It's been some time since I've visited here and written but I wanted to post an important report on BANK FEES!
Bank of America has had an ongoing agreement with Banco Santander in Mexico where you could use your be of A bank card at Santander's ATM's with no international fee or ATM use fee and only pay the standard 3% conversion fee for the currency. This was wonderful and I specifically got a be of A account just for my travels to Mexico.
But sadly, all things must come to an end and I just found out today that this is ending on August 15,2016. Bank of America will no longer waive ATM fees and Santander surcharges after that date. The exact text from be of A's website follows:
Mexico.
Note: Beginning August 15,2016, if you use a Banco Santander ATM in Mexico for a withdrawal, transfer or balance inquiry, our Non-Bank of America International ATM usage fee of $5 and the Santander ATM operator access fee will no longer be waived.
-- But don't cry into your cerveza yet my humble hermanos / brother mongers. All hope is not lost!
Bank of America still has an agreement with Scotiabank in Mexico! Scotiabank is not as common as Santander but you will find it in many major and minor cities.
This way you can still avoid paying $5 USD per inquiry / withdrawal on top of a $2 USD and up fee from the actual bank ATM you are using. That adds up! $7 USD is a dang good meal or a real good margarita.
I can't post links but I can at least give you the info you need to type into google to search. Just search 'scotiabank mexico' and click on 'Surcursales why Cajeros' (Branches and ATM's). Then enter the major city you are in or near and you will get a nice scaleable map you can shrink or enlarge and move around to state by state, city by city or street by street. Close to my favorite MP in Guadalajara (Danny's) there are actually 2 Scotiabanks. Closest one is on Chapultepec Sur 324, Colonia Americana, cross street is calle Miguel Lerdo de Tejada. The other one is on Avenida 16 de Septiembre 245, Colonia Centro, cross street is Calle Preciliano Sanchez. I found both of these easily using the map from scotiabank's site and cross checked with google maps.
I won't be able to get out there until probably November but as I near my travel date I will come here to check and post. I will have to check on Danny's before I go so anyone having any info on Danny's please post. I know the owner from when she used to work at Geisha's years ago and she is a wonderful woman and runs a great MP. Plus I like the food at the vegetarian restaurant across the street and on Sundays I believe on Calle Belgica at the little corner store (on the same side of the street as the vegetarian place) they sell some of the best home-made tamales for 10 pesos each. They probably raised the price to 12 pesos each but that's still extremely cheap for what you are getting! Oh how I miss my mujeres in Mexico and miss the wonderful treatment I have always received from the Mexicanos and Mexicanas during my travels there. Just use common sense, be courteous, and don't take unnecessary chances. Especially at night. When you are out and about and you will have a very awesome time down there. If you can learn some Spanish it will go a very long way in making things even more pleasurable! Viva las chicas! I have been cooped up in the USA way, way, WAY TOO LONG!
OK. Scotiabank everyone who has a Bank of America account. Still good for Mexico. I set mine up so I have two accounts and a main account that's untouchable and I transfer $ from the untouchable account into the two feeder accounts. That way if one card gets lost or compromised or stolen, they can only take a little bit, and you have a back up account. If both are lost, oh well. But your main account is untouchable. If you keep a minimum balance of 1,500 USD in the bank of America account (main one) they pretty much waive the fees on the accounts. It's my mongering account I have previously passed this tip to mongers and other expats I have met in Mexico by word of mouth but I am putting this here because anyone I have spoken to also knows of this site and will be very sad when Bank of America stops its agreement with Santander. Go to Scotiabank! Happy Mongering everyone!
El Mojado.
Google translate & Whatsapp
I have seen others mention using Google Translate with WhatsApp. Is it strictly cut-and-paste or is there some trick I am missing to translate in WhatsApp?
The quickest way I know of is when you copy text from whatsapp, a small translate icon appears in the upper right corner. Once you tap the icon the translation will appear on the screen. Make sure you have the current version of translate. It is actually pretty quick and you can then type in your reply in English and then copy and paste the Spanish translation into the whatsapp chat. Since you will basically be having a less than five minute chat with the Chica about setting up a day / time, translating won't take much effort. When I used to not be able to speak Spanish this would be my whatsapp chat to set up a date with a Chica, short, simple and to the point. In GDL I stress the importance of setting up a date at a nice Motel, especially with a quality chica. Not many chicas will just come to your hotel unless you picked them up at a bar. But they will easily meet you at a hotel because it is completely safe for them. I have listed some good places in my earlier posts. I will write the chat in English.
Me: Hello, beautiful, I am here in Guadalajara visiting and would like to spend some time with you. Can you please tell me about your schedule, prices and services? Thanks.
Chica: She will reply with her prices / services and schedule.
Me: OK, I am free Wednesday night at 8 pm. We can meet at Motel Kuboz. Does that work for you?
Chica: Yes, it does.
Me: OK. Once I'm at Kuboz I will send you the room number. Thanks again for the quick reply. See you soon!
I do not try to over chat with them because many of the chicas have said that irritates them and is a common thing many local men do. Business is business and I agree. Well if you have any more questions post them here.
Evening options for Indies
In Panama you have Habanos and Veneto. In San Jose you have HDR and Sportsman. Is there anything similar for indie chicas?
