Actually, I've been in Rio for Semana Santa and, other than Good Friday, it was business as usual. I do think your statement holds for most Latin American countries other than Brasil.

Rio Antiguo was a really nice terma with a beautiful bar and clean, spacious rooms. I could never understand why it couldn't build a stronger clientele. I'm glad I had multiple chances to enjoy that place before it closed way back when.

I didn't mean to suggest that the Monte Carlo was dirty when I said grungy because it wasn't dirty they had cleaning staff everywhere and a bathroom attendant in the sauna. It was, as you said, a bit worn down and tired like it's in need of a remodel sometime relatively soon. I agree with you Cane that I wonder about the long term business plans of the establishments.

I will say that the large room with the bigger bed was perfectly fine and had obviously been redone. The large room at Solarium was even nicer though they only have one of them there I believe.
