First of all congratulations on finding el centro safe. I stay in el centro all the time and never had a safety issue. The more you walk around the more familiar the surroundings and the more at ease you'll feel. Plenty of pussy walking around looking for financial assistance; p.

I returned from Medellin, Colombia in May from a stay just an iota short of two weeks. I must confess that most of the success I had in Medellin can indirectly be attributed to the contributions of this forum. That being said I felt I was obligated to return the generosity. Unfortunately this was my first trip to Medellin, so I do not believe my experiences will be of much help to more seasoned mongers. As a result my trip report will be more centralized toward those who are new to Medellin. However before I divulge into the gist of my South American memoirs allow me to address a few topics first.
I have seen this being discussed here quite often from time to time by fresh mongers. Hence I would like to state definitively that it is absolutely essential to learn Spanish before travelling to Medellin. My own trip in particular would have enhanced exponentially had I known more Espanol (Castellano). Next I would like to address the level of safety of Medellin. I think the answer to this question lies not with the city itself but rather each individual traveler. I for instance feel safer in Centro than I do in my own city in the United States. Most people thought I was Colombian before I began to speak very limited espanol. I wore the clothes that I usually wear hear in the USA, which essentially branded me incognito because my clothes were similar to that of the typical Colombiano. Everything accept for my pretentiously and vibrantly hued Nike sneakers, which all the girls dubbed as 'lindos'. If you are unlike myself and grew up with a privileged background perhaps you might find certain areas of Centro uncomfortable. But in my opinion Centro is certainly not dangerous by my standards, especially during the day. I will say that I saw quite a few people eating trash in Centro though. I have seen people rummaging through trash to find food in the States, but never have I ever seen someone actually eat trash before. As far as El Poblado, good luck finding a safer place in a major city in the US. Poblado is safe, clean, and has malls like Santa Fe. When it comes to flights, I flew Copa Airlines. Maybe I am not that smart but I did not realize this until I got to the plane, but I believe Copa caters to South Americans and Panamanians. I am a big guy so the seats were a little small for me but no one sat next to me anyway.
I had heard quite a bit about the mansion before I left for Medellin from various sources, including this forum, other websites, and a book I bought. Apparently it is very popular. I have wondered about that place. However I did not stay there, I stayed at Estelar Apartamentos Medellin. The attendant at the front desk told me one night that it was free to have a guest during the day, and that it costs $43, 000 COP during the night which included breakfast. I did not bring any chicas back to my room though. The hotel may not be the best place for a toda la noches in terms of discreetness and chica friendliness, however I slept like I was under an enchanted spell and there was no noise. In the end that was all I really wanted out of my hotel. I arrived in Medellin the first night around 10:30 local time. By the time I had gotten completely settled it was already 2:00 am, which meant it was 3:00 am on the east coast of the US where I live. I usually go to bed at 11:00pm EST, because of this all I wanted to do my first night is sleep. Miraculously though I managed to summon the vitality to fortify my constitution and went out. I got in the cab realizing that I did not know where I wanted to go, so I just said Fase II (Dos). Which of course I mispronounced and he promptly corrected. We pull up to Fase Dos and I read the fare amount from the meter, again incorrectly of course. The taxi driver then proceeds to give me back all the extra money I gave him, while some guys are simultaneously trying to usher me out of the cab and into the club. I pay the $10, 000 cover charge to the bouncer, who I would later become bouncer-patron acquaintances with. Once inside I make my way to the back to sit down, I then look up and see all the beautiful women and I was astonished beyond disbelief. Let me explain, I am viente uno anos, and this was my first trip outside of the US except for a trip to Canada when I was eight that does not count. I had never been to a strip club in the US let alone in another country. Hiro and I would spend the next couple of days touring many diferentes restaurantes. I had previously bought Jaime lunch at HatoViejo. I really enjoyed the food there so I got Hiro to take me back. We sampled some of the finest Bandeja paisas in Medellin as well from different restaurants. I met a sprightly young man of 22 at a restaurant on a mountain top that Hiro had recommended. This is where my memory starts to really fail me. I remember everything I did perfectly, but I do not recollect the order in which they took place. I have seen Hiro give directions to other cabbies, as well as a delivery boy on a motor scooter. Most people in Medellin drive as if they want a pedestrian as a hood ornament but this guy not only exemplified this behavior but set a new precedence for reckless driving. I am amazed we did not hit anyone on the way there, one guy I was sure was going to die. He dropped me off in the vicinity of Las Americas, he got out of the taxi and used an eccentric array of hand gestures along with Spanish to direct me. I do not speak Spanish so I do not know what he said but I imagine it was something like this 'Look motherfucker walk your fat ass down the street that way until you find the place, you gringo piece of shit. '. He might as well have said that, because I understood nothing anyway, and with that I was off to see the wizard. I walked down the street, I did not see anything. I turned the corner and I believe there is some sort of park and gathering place around there. However I still had not found the place, so I made another left turn and walked down that street. I came across a man standing in front of a curtain trying to usher me in, I walked right passed him and stopped two shops down to pause and ponder. I thought to myself that probably was Las Americas I just passed. I tried to discreetly look for a sign above the curtain but that was futile. So I just walked in, some guy started talking to me in Spanish. I had no clue what this guy was saying so I just handed him $10, 000 in the hopes that he would go away. He then asked me if I wanted a drink, and I said no just agua. Las Americas is a rather small strip club, they had about 15-20 chicas there. I enjoyed the rice, tortilla, and French fries, so the vegetarian aspect of the dish was more than satisfying I guess. I left with the crazy looking taxi driver that kept washing his taxi. He is either an extremely proud and professional man or he has OCD.
After this I visited my favorite girl in the whole wide world for the third and fourth time over the remainder of my trip at New Life. Once Hiro and I went there and I sat through the lineup while Hiro wrote down numbers on a pad, I am assuming he was trying to help me. However his help was not needed as my Spanish had progressed enough by this time that I could understand names very well. Also I was only there for one girl anyway so it did not matter. My girl was not there so we asked when she would be there, and the guy said tomorrow at 2pm. I went to New Life often over the course of my trip, there were girls that stayed in the lineup each time. I am not a seasoned traveler myself however despite my brevity of knowledge and experience, I can say that paisas are the kindest people I have ever met. The most important thing is to treat those women with respect, in my opinion these girls are the exact opposite of American women.
