I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 with Verizon but I plan to use my regular phone number with the travel pass so I can still call home, check work email and communicate with my coworkers while I'm in town. I have a couple spare phones at home, but it looks like they aren't charging well. So, I'll either need to get some cheap phone off of craigslist or just buy one when I get to GDL. What do you guys think? If I bring a phone with me, does it need to be setup for a specific kind of sim card. Like micro sim, nano sim, etc?

Thanks.[/QUOTE]You could buy a cheap android phone in Centro or one of the oxxo stores. Generally electronics are more expensive in Mexico compared to the States. One suggestion is to do what I did. I bought an unlocked dual sim Blu Phone on Amazon for $100. Since I travel internationally a lot it has been a great investment because I can keep my US number in one slot and then just put the local sim in the other one. No need to juggle two phones at all. Blu phones range in price from $70 to $250 and are real good phones for the price you pay. Plus they will either have 4 G or LTE service in Mexico too under Telcel or Movistar. Because I'm using the phone when I'm in the states and when I travel I'm getting the most bang for my buck. It's not like I keep the phone tucked in a drawer when I'm back home. Just switch sim's over and you are good. Check phone reviews out on YouTube or Amazon.

If you decide to buy a phone make sure it is unlocked and works under the the same GSM frequency of the country you are visiting. That way you don't take a phone that won't even work in Mexico. You can check the GSM frequency and the bands of any phone with a simple Google search.

As far as sim card size, there are sim adapters on Amazon or Ebay for any size. Plus Telcel stores have sim card cutters that can shape your sim to fit any phone. Don't worry about that.

For quite awhile now the pharmacies in Tijuana are pretty strict. And there were a lot of dirty cops looking for people that had meds on them without a prescription. If you get away from the US border the pharmacies will start selling you just about everything. It is in Tijuana, and maybe other border cities that won't sell you good stuff without a prescription. If you go to Cabo San Lucas they really will sell you just about anything. The pharmacies in Cabo, that are for the gringos sold me stuff imported from India. One sold me Ambien. Which is hard to get. In Mazatlan and GDL I have bought Sustanon (testosterone) quite often. That was this year and last year. If you are a little bit older and will spend a week or more in Mexico, get you a shot of testosterone and will have more mojo for sure. But be careful because you will get pissed off more easy.

In Colombia they now sell generic Cialis which works great, sell good sleeping pills (Zoplicona) and sell testosterone also. No prescriptions needed. The pharmacies will administer the testosterone shot if you want them to do it. For Mexico, no problems if you stay away from the US Border. Maybe it is the individual Mexican state laws that are different. If you want pharmacies that will literally sell you anything, look around Cabo. They sell those pills that people are all crazy about in the US. But I don't use those.

Bank of America still has an agreement with Scotiabank in Mexico! Scotiabank is not as common as Santander but you will find it in many major and minor cities.

This way you can still avoid paying $5 USD per inquiry / withdrawal on top of a $2 USD and up fee from the actual bank ATM you are using. That adds up! $7 USD is a dang good meal or a real good margarita.

I can't post links but I can at least give you the info you need to type into google to search. Just search 'scotiabank mexico' and click on 'Surcursales why Cajeros' (Branches and ATM's). Then enter the major city you are in or near and you will get a nice scaleable map you can shrink or enlarge and move around to state by state, city by city or street by street. Close to my favorite MP in Guadalajara (Danny's) there are actually 2 Scotiabanks. Closest one is on Chapultepec Sur 324, Colonia Americana, cross street is calle Miguel Lerdo de Tejada. The other one is on Avenida 16 de Septiembre 245, Colonia Centro, cross street is Calle Preciliano Sanchez. I found both of these easily using the map from scotiabank's site and cross checked with google maps.

I won't be able to get out there until probably November but as I near my travel date I will come here to check and post. I will have to check on Danny's before I go so anyone having any info on Danny's please post. I know the owner from when she used to work at Geisha's years ago and she is a wonderful woman and runs a great MP. Plus I like the food at the vegetarian restaurant across the street and on Sundays I believe on Calle Belgica at the little corner store (on the same side of the street as the vegetarian place) they sell some of the best home-made tamales for 10 pesos each. They probably raised the price to 12 pesos each but that's still extremely cheap for what you are getting! Oh how I miss my mujeres in Mexico and miss the wonderful treatment I have always received from the Mexicanos and Mexicanas during my travels there. Just use common sense, be courteous, and don't take unnecessary chances. Especially at night. When you are out and about and you will have a very awesome time down there. If you can learn some Spanish it will go a very long way in making things even more pleasurable! Viva las chicas! I have been cooped up in the USA way, way, WAY TOO LONG!

OK. Scotiabank everyone who has a Bank of America account. Still good for Mexico. I set mine up so I have two accounts and a main account that's untouchable and I transfer $ from the untouchable account into the two feeder accounts. That way if one card gets lost or compromised or stolen, they can only take a little bit, and you have a back up account. If both are lost, oh well. But your main account is untouchable. If you keep a minimum balance of 1,500 USD in the bank of America account (main one) they pretty much waive the fees on the accounts. It's my mongering account I have previously passed this tip to mongers and other expats I have met in Mexico by word of mouth but I am putting this here because anyone I have spoken to also knows of this site and will be very sad when Bank of America stops its agreement with Santander. If you have $25,000 to let sit, you can open a Schwab bank account, or stock trading account, IRA, or any combination and they refund all fees. This is popular. But I know not everyone wants or has $25 K to put in an account. If you have an IRA you could just swap it to Schwab and get the free ATM benefits. Chase Bank use to have a hard to find qualification for free ATM fees, but I think that is if you are in the military. If you have $100,000 USD and put it in Bank of America and apply to be a platinum member, or was it elite or privileged? You will get refunded a whopping $12 a month on ATM fees. The free Scotiabank ATM fees, deal also works in other countries such as the Dominican Republic. You can also open up a Western Union account online. Then for $5 you can Western Union yourself money coming from your checking account. But you have to wait 3 days. But it is only $5, and Western Union charges about 1% on the currency conversion.

With only 5 days in GDL and at 64, I did the best I could. I have little new to report. Thanks again to JDrama and was able to meet with World Traveler for coffee.
