The only money they make is through the exchange rate which is better than what I have found in any cash exchanger and as good as many ATMs. You can also do it all online and it is 100% safe unless you get mugged leaving the office.

Which WU option are you using that has no fees and will work to send money to yourself while you are in Kiev. Is it money available in minutes? Or are you talking about a transfer that takes more time. Please explain the details.

ATM's: I have used ATM's all over downtown Kiev with no problem, including the ATM inside Rio club. I use a Citibank account that doesn't charge me any 3% foreign transaction fee. The only fee might be from the ATM machine owner itself. Citibank uses an exchange rate that is satisfactory in comparison to exchange rates reported on [url]www.xe.com[/url] (which gives an average of the buy and sell rates). Ocassionally, Citibank has replaced my card as an anti fraud measure, but it has never been associated with any compromise of my actual account, or loss. It seems that do it as a precaution when they detect a Citibank card has been used in a city that is known for card readers activity, or something like that. I asked the Citibank fraud department, and they said that it was not any of the ATMs I used for withdrawal transactions, but rather card reading activity in the city itself. So I think that withdrawing and spending local cash from ATMs is the way to go.

As security against loss, I do not travel with large sums of $dollars or Euros to exchange. I keep a reasonable amount of dollars locked in my luggage as a security reserve, in case needed. But for use as spending cash in Kiev, I withdraw Ukrainian currency (UAH) from ATMs each day, in an amount that is sufficient for that days foreseen activities, to minimize the cash at risk. As further security against loss, I have a travel lock on my luggage and I lock any excess cash I have not used yet that day that is in my pockets, as well as credit cards and passport, into my luggage whenever guests are expected in my apartment.
