I have traveled all over Asia. Most of you were right about nothing much to do in AC except drinking and sex whereas in other cities there are historical and cultural sites, gourmet food, street and night markets, etc.

However, I am drawn to AC every year exactly because there is nothing else to do. It is the ultimate relaxing vacation, no agenda, no time table, no hassles. I sleep and wake up whenever I want to, eat whenever and whatever I want to, sometimes one meal a day, sometime three meals a day. If I want to drink and / or get pussy, I can. If I don't feel like it, I don't. During the day, I relax, catch up on my reading, surf the web, cleanup the junk-data in my laptop, walk in the mall, or just do nothing in my room.

The most important thing is IT'S VERY CHEAP. For the same price there are very few places that can compete with AC. Finally, AC is English-friendly. I suppose I can get all of the above in Mexico, Dominican Republic or some other place in Latin America but I don't speak Spanish.

If only AC is near a beach.

Those of you lamenting the influx of other Asian tourists and dreaming of having exclusive rights to the AC playground might find that the profile of competing mongers increases over the next year or so. PAL is increasing its flights to Mumbai next year.

Pretty much sure within a short while they will adapt to the new territories and leave certain approaches back home. Seen this in Thai forums and UAE forums. Unfortunately the growing number of their traveling population might mean there will always be new guys coming around and carrying their own style on board.

And as far as Phuket, it is expensive. Not even counting mongering, the area is a Western tourist trap, someone told me they spent so much money there with their girlfriend they could have just gone to Hawaii. I'm not saying you will bring a girlfriend, my point is hotel, food, drinks, sightseeing is expensive in Phuket from what I have heard.

I will be making my first trip to AC in Jan. And I will need to exchange my money at the airport (Manila) to pay for the ride and the hotel. Where in the airport (Manila) can I get a good exchange rate.

Chris[/QUOTE]After you pick up your bag walk straight ahead to the windows of the places to exchange money. I have never seen a bad rate. They give some of the best rates in the world; especially for it being an airport.

Just ask anybody that works there. Depends on what time you get in. Many changers are closed if you get in late like I do. Make sure to ask for a receipt and count your money. You should be just fine at NAIA.

A French Canadian tourist was mauled, robbed and shot by two riding tricycle men while walking with a female companion in a subdivision in Bgy. Balibago here last Wednesday.

The suspects immediately sped away, leaving behind the badly beaten victim whose gunshot wound was oozing with blood. The victim was taken to hospital where he died two hours later due to cardiac arrest triggered by the injuries he suffered.

If we had resisted or even just argued back when they shouted at us, we could have ended like the unfortunate Canadian tourists.

Our mistake was taking out the wallet whereupon one of the robbers just grabbed the wallet and took the cash. When we tried to take back the wallet he shouted at us. The other robber was busy blocking and distracting my friend. We counted ourselves lucky for just losing some cash instead of our lives or being seriously injured, as they also showed us their knives to scare us.

Totally random killing? I seriously doubt it. Hard to tell what any expat gets into.
