You can cross, both coming and going to Mexico without a passport. But prepared to get hassled. If you apply for a passport or passport card you can cross with application receipt. They will let you cross with that and ID.

I have crossed with my passport application receipt and there was no problems. The only downside is that you have to wait in the general public line. The amazing thing is that took less than 3 weeks to receive my passport card.

Do not tell the girls that you get extra time. Do not bring it up.
If you do, the girls will try to charge you extra. If the girls ask about the VIP card, tell them that you get a discount on the rooms, you get a nicer room, you get a free beer, and you get a limo ride back to the border. All true.
But do NOT tell them about the extra time. Pretend that you are new with the VIP card and you don't know anything about the bonus time. Sometimes there is no difference. Apparently, for now, Cascades has no difference between their online reservations rate and their walk-up room rate of $55 for single rooms (Sunday through Thursday nights).
So after applying the 20% HK VIP card discount, the clerk at Cascades' desk was willing to charge Long Don Silva last Thursday night either $44 or 660 pesos.
Currently HK & Cascades are using a 15:1 exchange rate. In Tijuana you can always see what the current, real, financial market exchange rate for pesos and dollars is from the exchange rate that is posted at Sorianna. During New Year's weekend Sorianna was displaying and using an exchange rate of 17.31. Tourists using debit card at ATMs in Tijuana will usually get the genuine financial market rates (before ATM fees are applied). During the NY's weekend many cambios in Tijuana were offering around 16.5 pesos for each dollar. Since all these exchange rates for monger to obtain pesos were better than the 15:1 rate being used by HK & Cascades,. , Long Don was smart to pay for his his room in pesos, it saved him an additional 10% in dollar equivalents.

Rizo de Oro is owned by the same family group that owns Cascades, HK, BT and LC. In the last two years I have used my HK VIP card to get 20% room discounts and even the 50% overnight room discount at Rizo de Oro on Monday and Tuesday nights. I have never used the HK VIP card to get extended time for short-term room rentals at Rizo de Oro, but it definitely got me the OK to check out from my overnight RdeO room a half hour later (1:30 PM instead of the usual 1:00 PM checkout time.

Quick question:
I understand that at the San Ysidro crossing, pedestrians are required to obtain a 7 day "visa" to enter Mexico on foot.
However, can anyone clarify whether the Mexican authorities actually stamp your passport or do they staple a visa to the passport and stamp that? Any info anyone could provide about this detail would be appreciated.
