I am planning to go to Rio / Brazil in the next few months, and am wondering whether to hold off until the World Cup or not. Been following the news alot, and it seems like there are a lot of protests. Also, there is a lot of suspicion that the country won't be ready, and that things like transportation and safety will break down. All this not to mention the inevitable price hikes.

Anyone here experienced with eyes on the ground have a good feel for what it will be like? If it will be too chaotic and expensive, may just opt to go earlier, like the end of April, and enjoy the the type "entertainment" available year round!

Hotels, tickets etc will be very expensive.

Safety shouldn't be a problem. A couple of thousand gringos will most likely get robbed during the world cup but there will propably be a lot of police around the city. Just use your common sense and you'll be fine.

Chaos. There will for sure be a lot of things not working properly. The airports will have immense queues and delays.

There are lots of protests. At the moment not that bad but it could worsen. However I wouldn't consider the protest as a threat to your safety.

Transportation is already really f*cked up. Specially the last week after they made Av Rio Branco working in both directions.
