My experience was being told " that is an EU driving licence you need international licence to drive here" end quote, it was only 200 baht tea money, and since then I have always carried an international driving licence, I have been stopped, and let go without tea money or the request for it.
I am sure there is no set rule. I show them my Calif. DL, my AAA insurance card and passport.
I have always been let go. Doesn't mean next time I won't have to pay.

That's why the police mainly pull over tourists (on motorcycles-scooters) at the checkpoints on 2nd Road and Beach Road as it is a 99% sure way of getting their fine.
Most reputable places will have the licence requirement in the small print of the rental contract, but who reads that? Hence why so many have to cough up.

Once stopped I get off take the key out and move towards my seat to open it and get out all my paperwork. Regardless of whether I need to carry it I have it, if asked. Never in all the years have I had a cop even try to take my keys from my bike?
From all the years of being stopped throughout Pattaya not just in the tourist area the one thing I know going back 10 years is at one time they had no idea what a International Driver license look like? Through the years in Pattaya with the cops it has become popular since many renting bikes just want to rent them knowing full well they will get stop at some point. Let's get this out too that you don't have insurance on the bike regardless of what the rental shop guys tell you!
The rule of thumb is that the cops can't read English! They look at the International book because that is what their chief have told them to do. I can tell you majority of them don't even have the stamp next to the motorbike area allowing or confirming that you can drive a motorbike. The more you give them the more confused they are so in many cases not to lose face they look at it and act like they know what they are doing and give it back to you.
They have check points throughout Pattaya, the smallest thing you can do for yourself at a light is stay right and never be the first to go through. Count to three and then go for two reasons? Cars running red light and the first wave always gets pull over they can only pull so many over?
Let's get this out too that you don't have insurance on the bike regardless of what the rental shop guys tell you!
There is definitely some kind of insurance on the bike. It may not be the kind you may need in a particular situation, but there is definitely something. Why else would I have to go to the insurance window at the DMV and pay 200 baht each year before I can get my tag.
I have been stopped at these 3 places:
The south end of 2nd Road. Not far from the go cart area.
The north part of 2nd Road. Near the circle.
As you enter Beach Road. From the north.
I have seen them as these 3 locations many times.
One thing that I did last time near the go-carts is as I was coming down the hill, I got off and walked my bike through the intersection. They were stopping everyone.
A pain in the ass, but they never even gave me a sniff.
Beach road just past Soi 8 there is a cop station. Seen many times out there stopping tourist

Stud, you continue to do what you do best and that is stay out late and find that pussy
Which many have questioned you but I know you are a young master. When it comes to domestic
Items and day to day living aside from the mongering leave that to me?
Yes there is some kind of insurance and although you pay yearly with your bike registration before it happens to you and you try to file I'll save you the laughter.
Since you and I aren't Thais this insurance is useless to us because it basically goes towards their National health care. This insurance allows a Thai who gets into a accident to go to a place like Banglamung Hospital.
And get treated. But nevertheless you have to pay it, on a rented I will stick my neck out and say 99. 9%
Of the Thais renting a bike to you will say something " have insurance" if he / she can speak some English
Ask them the next question. If the bike gets stolen or damage beyond repair what is it going to cost me to buy it?

Once right continue on the right until you are past Central. Lately they have a secondary cop after Soi 9, waiting?

When a car did a hit and run on my cousin he had to pay 1500 baht for the bike. I never saw the shape of the bike, but he looked like he had gotten beat up with an ugly stick.
If little faults, proceeding on distemper,
Shall not be wink'd at, how shall we stretch our eye.
When capital crimes, chew'd, swallow'd and digested,
Appear before us? We'll yet enlarge that man, though
Crazy4Thai, Luvpuss, and others, would have him punished.

I raccomend for anybody staying longer then one mont hin Thailand, to make a proper Thai driving license. It is easy, cheap and quick.
