According to the government of Canada security report on the Philippines:
"Both petty crime and violent crime, sometimes involving guns, are a serious concern, especially in urban areas. Avoid showing signs of affluence or carrying large sums of money, and keep valuables in safekeeping facilities. Criminal gangs are active in Manila, including the Makati central business district, and have drugged and robbed unsuspecting tourists. Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers. Be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum or cigarettes from new acquaintances, as they may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery. Do not accept transportation from strangers. Bystanders have been hit by stray gunfire during armed robberies and subsequent pursuit of the perpetrators by authorities. Avoid disturbances. Violent incidents may increase around election periods.

You have been advised not to come to PI due to the fact that some of us think you will spend all day covered in palstic wrap to avoid HIV etc from the bed sheet. Gents see SAfe Sex thread where PP has been asking all sorts of questions and not reading the replies LOL.
PP. All countries of the world are dangerous. If I read my government's view on where I live and work I would be nervous wreck, hide under the stairs and generally drive around in a tank.
I do none of these and have lived happily here (for many years).
So please take the advice from me and others. STAY AWAY! The Philippines is way too dangerous for woosies and pansies like you and go to Thailand where you say you can get decent HIV tests (quickly) and won't be shot at.
Rant off!

Have to go with WR on this one. I just left MNL after a joyful week of meeting young filippinas; walking the malls and eating in restaurants: all in Makati. Never even saw an altercation, never mind the mayhem portrayed by the Pink Pearl. BTW, that sounds like a name that a ladyboy would have. But I digress.
Now Screaming Beaver almost had his ass flattened by a tank outside the Peninsula a few years ago, but that was because of a coup and therefore was a different animal. Nothing like what Pink was talking about, but I'll leave it to the Beaver to tell that tale.
I'm in Bangkok now and it seems to be full of caucasians. Probably they're all looking for that safe mongering experience. In fact, I've seen more white guys in the last few days than I would see in a month back home in Miami. I'll take Manila anytime.

It is not arrogance it is FACT
You are another who told all of us to stay away so why are you on this thread. Do as your advice suggested to the mpnger mongers and stay away.
If people don't like the country is fine but to harp on and moan all the time (or ask inane questions all the time with no sharing of information and no FRs) then they deserve what the get. I am polite you try a F# reply at times LOL.
So follow you advice on the General thread and stay off PI as you don't want to come here so why read?

Don
Ah, good times. It seems like yesterday but actually goes back to 2007 while staying at the Peninsula Hotel. During my last day there I thought I would step out to Glorietta Mall and pick up a few things before my flight. Little did I know that Senator Trillanes was orchestrating a coup attempt at my hotel. By the time I left Glorietta the hotel was surrounded by flip soldiers and tanks under the direction of President Gloria Arroyo. I was unable to enter the hotel to retrieve my luggage, passport, money and credit cards. A few hours later all hell broke loose with a tank crashing through the front lobby with cannon fire and tear gas in the air.
At that point Marshall Law went into affect and everybody had to be off the streets by sundown. I'm standing on Makati and Ayala ave with nothing but a cell phone and a couple thousand pesos in my pocket. I then did what any respectable monger would do. I called the girl I was with the night before who I barfined from a bar on P. Burgos. She invited me over to stay at her apartment along with the other eight bar girls living there who had the night off due to Marshall Law preventing customers coming to the bars. Let's just say I'm a big fan of coup attempts now.
Welcome back DD. Looking forward to your field reports.

Rant off!
There are those that are afraid of their own shadows. What's the saying "nothing ventured, nothing gained?" I'm not going to be driven by fears. I had a crazy experience last night in Siem Reap and have had a few others this trip. Makes for great stories and great laughs. And as far as robberies go. I'm not a hero, hero's get shot and mugged. My standard line in a situation like that would be "excuse me sir with the gun, you have forgotten my watch, it's a knock off of a 12K watch but hey, this is Asia. Meddelin Bob and I had dinner last night and were talking about the same thing. Sh*t he moved to Columbia when it was dangerous.
Party on Amigos!

Great story. My first trip to Phil. 1981, there was a midnight curfew in Olongapo city. The girls were always eager to get barfined as the midnight hour approaced.

No way to compete!
there is no way to compete with "tanks and tear gas, spending the night with 8 bar girls. at their place" so i will just share a small story of my last visit to the land of "big boy" dreams that is ac.
i only had a couple of days, but made the most of them. i focused on perimeter bars this time and really enjoyed mirror mirror. i went on sunday afternoon after making a short stop at girls generation and after school. not a lot of girls, but the ones there were fun and i also liked one of the waitresses. a little older, but got a real good vibe from her. promised to return and went to carousel for the sunday,"who let the dogs out" party. i enjoy these because you can see girls from a lot of bars, and all the regular girls from the club are not on stage. sat a cutie from carousel and decided to bar fine her. she was a good bed buddy, but i sent her home after one pop because i was tired and wanted to sleep alone.
next afternoon, went to girls gen and saw a girl i had from the last visit. i knew what to expect and was glad to get a little afternoon delight. she has kids, so i let her go home by 6. back to mirror and the girl i was interested in was already encumbered, so took a chance on the waitress. she was surprised i kept me promsie to return and showed her appreciation in a number of ways. i was exhausted afterwards. i offered to let her go home, but she asked if she could stay. i said sure as long as she promised not to [CodeWord123] me in my sleep. had to wake me first. slept well like comfortable lovers, and then had a racuous session in the morning! as i said, a little older, not what i would call a "hottie", but well worth the time. i will probably repeat at some point because she was so much fun to be around and enjoyed our time, as did i.
there is one itch i would like to scratch, that maybe someone could help me with. i don't normally go for the 5 star stunners just because they aren't always as good as their looks and i want a litltle effort put forth. however, on this trip i saw at least two girls that i really wanted to do just because they were so damn good looking. unfortunately they were already accompanied, so i didn't want to pry as to were they worked. i'm talking movie star, magazine pretty, but i wonder if anyone can recommend a place or two that would be the best bet to find a gal like this. i know it is very subjective and i am fairly familiar with most of the ac bars, but am open to suggestions. pm's are great if you prefer.
tia.
can't wait for the return visit!

Get to the big bars on fields right when the evening shift starts. If you wait, the Koreans will snatch up all the stunners within the first hour.

ON weekends, some of the Manila high rollers bring their girls to ac / subic / pg / etc. This is just one explanation.

http://travel.gc.ca/destinations/philippines
I have travelled to the Philippines over 50 times in 22 year period from 1991 and have travelled and mongered all over the country, and I can honestly I have never been robbed, pickpocketed, mugged, threatened, drugged or been offered drugs or seen anyone doing anyone doing any of these things. Of course I am not saying that things don't happen in the Philippines as they obviously do. But if you read and believe the above travel warning from the Canadian Gov, you would think that they are an every day occurrence to all the tourists who travel and frequent the country on a regular basis.

The fact is, if you ever RTF, many people make similar comments to mine.
It seems you can't distinguish between (1) evaluating a countries' dangers honestly and calmly & taking appropriate security measures and (2) being a "nervous wreck, hiding under the stairs".
If you can't handle others talking about the first item above, I suggest you refrain from reading such discussions let alone responding to them.
Ditto for Safe Sex issues with which you seem to have the same issue.

Runners
The concept of runner didn't exist, even after the curfew was lifted. And come to think of it, I often went to the gal's place.

I don't want to open a can of worms, but it begs to question how many posters here have ever gotten beat up or robbed (not including unsuspected pick-pocketing or some bar fine stealing from your room) in AC or in all of PI. Those numbers would surely tell you if there is really something to be concerned about.
