Your wrong on this one and I would say I know better than someone who "has Asian friends" for obvious reason.

As stated, it would be odd for someone to refer to themselves as "Chinese American" casually unless the Chinese part itself was pertinent. Common vernacular from actual Chinese Americans would more than likely lead to referring to themselves as more generally Asian American or just simply Chinese. I don't speak for Chinese Americans and not as a representative of the Asian Americans but I'the go ahead and insist that you're wrong on this one, speaking about something where you don't have first hand knowledge.

The point was that the organizations wound expectedly use formal terminology while it would be awkward if a person did so in a casual setting. The point is formality. The oddity is using that vernacular in common speak. WE Asian Americans would not often say Chinese-American or Filipino-American unless the actual nation was relevant to the conversation. Most of us would just say Asian-American to get the racial descriptor across. If the specific Asian country needed to be conveyed, then most of us would shortened it to just the country and drop American. Like I said before, the naivety accusations are ironically amusing. The persistent insistence of deeper insight is also quite hilarious, like telling a chef how he just made that meal. You might not be as knowledgeable as you think on this topic. Next think you're going to say is that black people in America use the term African American in casual conversations around each other because you have two black friends and know a guy at work.
