A Melbourne brothel owner had $1.1 million in net assets while her partner had mounting debts when she disappeared last year, a court has been told.

The Victorian Supreme Court was also told today that brothel madam Xiou Ling Liang, also known as Shirley Liang, was hit on the head with a shovel by her partner weeks before she disappeared.

Police believe the 44-year-old was murdered at her inner suburban Southbank apartment on February 24, 2006, but they have never been able to find her body.

Ms Liang's partner Neil Cameron Chalmers, 48, of Southbank, is standing trial for her murder.

Financial analyst Geoffrey Bateman, who examined both Ms Liang and Chalmers' financial records, told the court she had net assets of $1.1 million when she disappeared on February 24, 2006.

He said Ms Liang's assets included a brothel in City Road, South Melbourne, a house in Footscray, three inner city apartments and shares worth $100,000.

Chalmers had net assets of $385,500, but he also had several outstanding debts, including a loan against his company Corporate Landscaping and credit card bills adding up to nearly $100,000, Mr Bateman told the court.

He said an examination of Chalmers' company records showed that Corporate Landscaping had recorded losses and was insolvent in February 2006.

"The company had been making losses in consecutive years," Mr Bateman said.

Michael Esenyel, who worked as a cleaner at the City Road brothel, said Chalmers had confided in him several times about his relationship with Ms Liang.

He said that in late 2005 to early 2006 Chalmers told him he was upset that a Chinese businessman had been emailing Ms Liang about hiring her for a $10,000 two week escort job.

"I said that is bullshit, this man is probably mucking around," Mr Esenyel told the court.

"He (Chalmers) said he told me just in case she didn't come back."

A client of Ms Liang, known only as "Brian" for legal reasons, met her at a Richmond brothel the day she disappeared and said she seemed relaxed.

In a statement tendered to the court Brian said he met Ms Liang, who he knew as Silvia, 12 years earlier and saw her on a weekly basis for "a massage and hand relief".

He said he only had sexual intercourse with her once, and that was at her Whiteman Street apartment a month before she disappeared.

Both Brian and Mr Esenyel told the court that Ms Liang had suffered a head injury in early February.

Mr Esenyel said Chalmers allegedly admitted to him that he accidentally hit her with a shovel.

"He told me that he took her to a work site ... and accidentally shut the door of his car and hit her on the head with the shovel," Mr Esenyel said.

The trial before Justice Paul Coghlan continues tomorrow.

Thanks for this tip. As I mentioned in my earlier post, i ama short term visitor to Melbourne and I am not sure if I will have the time to indulge in this elaborate Race Drink Party & Fuck ritual, though it sounds smashingly too good.
