You certainly don't need US based DEI rules in order to give pregnant women and women with newborns strong rights. Tariffs can be useful if they are targeted for ensuring you keep strategic domestic industries alive.

Blanket tariffs especially against your main trading partners just a few years after signing a free trade agreement are just dumb. Then there is the "here is the tariff, oops, no tariffs" game. Good for Canada for saying that they don't play this bullshit game anymore even though they have more to lose than the US.

I work in the financial industry in Switzerland. Clearly by far most high paying roles are with white guys in their 40's and 50's. Since years there are unofficial quotas to promote more women. It's not written down, but in all promotion discussions the message is find a woman to promote. At least in my area, the result is that all women got promotions regardless of their performance. They don't have from where to choose, there are just less women starting in the industry.

Equality of opportunity? All for it. But I am not for equality of outcome.
