Even Spring has regular massages. Then there are also the other franchises such as yili, fudi, dragonfly, Yu, Zen, and a host of others.

Were others on your list like this? I haven't tried, other that dragonfly, which I think is totally legit.
I lived in Suzhou for 5+ years but moved back to the USA. Still get to Shanghai for work but not Suzhou and have been frustrated with the level of service and prices in Shanghai. Luckily one of the ladies I saw regularly in Suzhou moved with another lady to Shanghai and they do massage out of their apartment. I was a little worried the first time because it is a very Chinese sort of apartment and area, but it turned out well. You are correct in stating there is no tipping but nor would you get a he for one of the lower priced massages. I'd say there's a definite difference from Spring which has more options and the masseuses look more provocative.
As for other 'veggie' joints, like Kangdi or Kangdao, although rare, there have been instances where he has been offered if tipped. Keep in mind, as we all should know already, most legit masseuses won't have the look or the demeanor of someone who regularly gives tug jobs.
