Well, for me, the issue isn't a measly $30 but the possibility of the border officers escorting me back to the turnstyle after I've spent a shit-ton of cash coming to the other side of the country.
The only people who I've heard of that happening are the ones who refused to pay the $30 FMM fee or the $20 mordida for entry to Mexico. Apparently their indignation at being "forced to pay a bribe" is pretty strong. I know that a couple of them turned around and paid someone to drive them in from the US. Sounds like a hassle just to make a statement.

Normally I'm also buying the 6 month pass to avoid filling my book up with stamps. I tried to get a passport card to avoid that and all it did was leave me with no passport for 6 months, I lost the money around 30 dollars, the fed government doesn't even have accurate instructions online on what's needed for a passport card, when you have a passport, but your prior passport card was lost or stolen. So you try and deal with them by mail and it gets no where till you tell them to just send me my book back and keep my money. So for now, 30 dollars is ok, but it should be 35 soon as it's been 30 for a year around, and at the rate it went from 20 to 30 one would expect it to be 50,60 in 5 or 6 years. 50,60 is enough to make some guys stay away. I like the excitement of Tijuana but the strip clubs alone to me aren't worth even 40 for the 6 month pass. For $35 I get hotels near revolucion that are ok but not good. For $45 I'm getting beautiful hotels 5 minute walk to beach, in north county, San Diego with fridge microwave parking etc.
On principle I don't like the idea of paying bribes either, but that's something for the people complaining about the $30 fee to keep in mind.
Also. And I could be wrong about this. But even the 180-day FMM pass for $30 is something they're being very lenient on. To my understanding FMM passes weren't intended to include in / out privileges, meaning you're by law supposed to surrender the FMM pass once you leave Mexico, whether you stay for only a couple days, or whether you stay the maximum 6-month period. In theory, if you purchase a 6-month FMM pass it's good for UP TO 6 months but if you leave Mexico even after a few day, you're supposed to surrender the FMM to Mexican officials and then apply for a new one whenever you decide to re-enter the country. That's how it's supposed to work in theory, though in practice Mexican officials allow tourists to leave and re-enter the country using the same FMM card until the card expires. So the fact that they're also letting us slide on this is another thing to keep in mind LOL.
The fact that slimy-ass Mexican border agents are taking advantage of the pandemic situation to steal $30 from tourists that should not have to pay $30 is also something to keep in mind.
I think if you pay the $30 you won't have to worry about border officers escorting you back to the border.
What seems to be lost on a lot of people here is that the border has technically been closed for "non-essential" travel between the USA And Mexico FOR NEARLY A YEAR NOW (since last March). So none of us that are traveling to Tijuana solely for the purpose of hitting up the Zona Norte bars or other leisure purposes are supposed to even be getting let in in the first place LOL. .
I forgot where I read this. Maybe it was on the mexican government website, or maybe I read it on ISG here.
But, supposedly traveling to the zona norte is Essential travel for the purpose of emergency cum transfusions.
Who knows? It's mexico.

$30 visa
I have not crossed since Oct so my info old.
From June 2020 to Oct 2020 I crossed by foot multiple times. Once with a friend. Only once was I asked to pay $30. The excuse was tourism was closed so I needed a visa. Crossed multiple times after that and nothing was said at all when I crossed into Mexico. Yes I had valid passport that is good for years.
My advice. There probably is not going to be a requirement to get a visa but be ready just in case.
Trying not to judge but is $30 that big of a deal?
To all those going down. Have fun! Will be joining the fun myself next weekend and already planning next trip with friends.

Visa
All the bros mentioning paying for visa, in all my travels, I have never payed to cross.

Visa
Vito,
'Yep. Don't give in too easily to thieves and robbers.
Tell them you have essential business with Sindicatura, filing official complaints against shake downs and robberies by policias and government workers.
Advise them of Mexico's imm laws and ask for his and his boss' names. Write them down with date and time with any details. That would scare the shit out of them and shut them up!
Booked my trip for 3/19-3/21. Is there any place within walking distance to do some shopping for basics? OxxO will have 80-90% of what I need, but I usually make a trip to WalMart at Playas to stock up when I arrive. Trying not to make that trip this time and haven't ventured more than 2-3 blocks from the zona on foot. Event something similar to a CVS / Walgreens will work for me. Also if anybody wants to grab food or beers, PM me.
Walmart at Hipodromo is closer (but not walking distance) and has a lot of other shops around it. It's also not to far from Zona Rio, so you can stop at Mr. Pampas or some other nice restaurant on the way.
I'm not as experiences as most here, but in my 10+ trips to Tijuana since moving to CA, I've driven in and made a beeline to my hotel Holiday Inn Express. I've never been stopped at the border and I never even see a police car on my way to the hotel (it's 95% express highway to the hotel). I leave my car parked there the entire time. They have a front door security guy out front watching the front entrance and cars 24 hours. I throw him $1 each day just to be sure he's paying attention to my car. I avoid paying for parking on the US side, avoid the $30 fee conversation, have my car if I need it (sometimes I'll venture out in it mid-day always careful to keep far away from the zona), and I can drive back into the US with Sentri (about 15 minute wait). I'm surprised I don't see this option suggested more. I suppose the drawback is I'm staying outside the Zona, but for me that's not an issue. I prefer the contrast I get by not always being there.
I hope you're getting Mexican auto insurance. And there is some question as to whether or not the insurance is valid if you don't have a valid FMM. For me it's easier to just get a new FMM every six months. It's a small fee to avoid the problems that might come from not having it.

We can complain all we want about slimy-ass border agents. Well, guess what. That slimy-ass is letting you in when he has every right under the law to send your ass packing. If the border was open, I'd agree with you SMD. But it's not.
And for what it's worth, I've never been required to purchase the FMM. One time, an agent told me "next time" I'll need it. Slimy, right? LMAO.
Just returned from HK, overnight trip. Didn't have to pay $30 for the FMM and the clubs close at 3 am, not sure when they open up in the morning, but it was open at about 10:30.
A chica on Wednesday began in HK at 9 am.

I'm thrilled to pay only $30 measly dollars for a 6 month visa to cross with no stamps and zero wait time. I've waited between 15 mins and 1 hour multiple times, spending a grand total of at least 3-5 hours in the line over the last 2 years. That's 3-5 more hours I could have been buried deep in puta pussy. It's like a Mexican Sentri pass for $60 per year, yes please I will be a lifetime customer of this blessed pass.
