I didn't care to get a new Schwab account as I don't travel much yet. I plan on traveling much more starting the end of this year or early next year so I'll definitely open one before then. For those without a Schwab account, I recommend exchanging currency close to home before your trip to Brazil.
The phone plan I got was $2 (activation) and $10 for data + minutes. I don't know how much data / minutes. Communication was very difficult, even with google translate. It is definitely a cheap option if I can get it to work. I tried T-Mobile for a brief time a couple years ago, but they didn't have very good coverage many places (close by work, home, golf courses), so I've been with Verizon for many years.
Staying in Bourbon has been a huge blessing. Being able to walk around everywhere even though my phone's internet's not working has made the biggest difference. I'm fairly sure you won't get a great rate for Brazilian Reais at a North American or European bank. It might be better than the airport, but that is about it.

I think all US providers have some kind of short term international plan, you can check your provider's plan so you can use it in the future while you are trying to get local sim to work.

Well brancas that is anyway. And as can be seen in my many, many Rio pics over the years, it's almost all brancas found in the termas all over Rio.
