In my 11 to 12 years of visiting Medellin I've seen this happen dozens of times. The really attractive, as well as smart and personable girls are able to find a foreign benefactor during that time and often move to Europe or the US. A good number use their earnings to buy a house, start a business, or pay off college. The largest number spend it as quickly as they make it on trips and parties. For the lower and working class I would say it's almost a socially acceptable 'phase' for the young women given how common it seems to be. It seems to end when they hit 25 or have more than 1 kid.
