i went to koh samed last week for a short holiday with the shrimp. i had a great time.

this is more of a travelogue than anything else, but i hope it is helpful.

we took a taxi from bangkok to rayong harbour. cost 2200 bht after some haggling with a group of off-duty drivers in soi 11. the taxi arrived at our hotel on time, and took exactly 2 hours 10 minutes door-to-door, despite the heavy traffic in bangkok.

at the harbour we had missed the 2.30pm ferry by 2 minutes, so had to wait until the 3.30pm ferry. the choice is the standard ferry for 100 bht each, or a shared speedboat for 250 bht each (i think the price includes a fee for entry to the national park). we opted for the latter, and it took us directly to our hotel’s pier. the journey time was 5 minutes on the speedboat, or 30 minutes on the ferry. if you take the ferry you then have to get a truck to your hotel.

we had booked the samed cliff resort on-line. 2200 bht per night for a bungalow. it was perfect for our needs – clean, spacious with en-suite and view of the sea. the beach is only small here, and hire of a scooter (300 bht per day) is essential unless you want to be stuck in one place all the time.

the main beach has fabulous white sands, and in the evening is even prettier, being lit up by thousands of lanterns and candles at the many beachfront bars and restaurants. koh samed is a national park, but these are only words written on a sign, it doesn’t mean that anybody picks up the litter or keeps the place tidy. in the day-time we ate at the thai eateries, and went to the beach for a romantic evening meal :).

the island is a holiday resort for thai people at the weekend, and for backpackers the rest of the time. i did see one bar advertising coyote dancers but it was dark and always seemed empty. i would guess very hard to pick up a girl there – take your own.

coming back was the reverse of going out. doh! 350 bht total on speedboat, and 1000 bht to pattaya.

Doesn't seem to be very much info on this place, so here are my observations for what they're worth.

I 'took my own' so can't report on quality of service.

Stayed at White Sand Beach. The cluster of girly bars (known locally as 'Mini Pattaya') is at the southern end of the resort. Girls here looked poor-to-middling, with the occasional cutie. All the ones I chatted with were from Issaan, which is my personal preference looks-wise in Thailand, so I hope my assessment is fair. YMMV of course. The girls were asking for 2000 LT but could be haggled down to 1500, so prices same same Phuket. There are two more bars where girls are available which are on the hill going out of town, almost opposite the pseudo-Irish bar Paddy's Palms. Decent falang food here btw, if you're getting bored with local fayre.

Just before you hit the next beach along from White Sand, on the right on the hill down into the village of Baan Khlong Phrao is another small cluster of beer bars. Carry on to the next area called Kae Bae, which seems to be the Amphur area of Koh Chang, and there are several clusters of beer bars on the northern stretch.

Carry on further south and both Lonely Beach and Bang Bao pier have their attractions, but I couldn't see any punting ones on my (admittedly brief) visits.

A post from a few years back has a map with some locations (search for "To skank in Mae Sai" in your favorite search engine). What I found seemed different from his map. Of course, his map is 3 years old, and this area is changing; places come and go.

Here are my revised directions.

As you are walking towards the border crossing along route 1, just before the crossing is a soi with a banner for Hotel Wang Thong. The soi dips down near hotel entrance. At the next intersection, there is a snooker/pool hall on the left. If you go straight, you will go into a bus depot area (but NOT the bus station to return to Chiang Rai, which is 4km south). This may or may not be the T intersection the previous poster referred to.

Turn left. A short distance, you come to another T. (If you turn left here, the soi continues UNDER the border crossing area). Turn right instead, and walk a hundred yards/meters or so.

This seems to be the hub.

There is a peach-colored place with a sign that says 999 and massage and some Thai words. I asked how much for massage. No massage, only boom-boom, said the mama, and 500 baht. Another place, the mama said 600 baht. The girls did NOT look like the legendary Burmese girls, but I did not go all the way in. There are probably more places in this local's area, just wander around.

BTW if you do Mae Sai as a day trip, the last bus back to Chiang Rai is 18.00. I missed it, and had to negotiate a ride with a guy who was only planning to go to Mae Chan, because I had a morning flight from CR.

I also visited Tachileik. There are guys in the market area selling cigarettes, but they also have Viagra clones. Don't pay more than 150 baht for a package of (4) 100mg pills. I have not yet tried the ones I got. The same guys offered me girls for 700 baht. I am certain that if I could find the brothels myself, they would be much cheaper than that, since it is less on the Thai side.

If you go to Tachileik, it costs $10 or B500 for a two-week pass. Obviously if you can bring a $10 you will save a few bucks.
