The rest of the fellas can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think it'd be damned hard to travel through any portion of Mexico without going through some wide swathes of rural cartel-controlled areas where you'd stick out like a sore thumb and not even have the luxury of a windshield and the body of a car to protect you from gunfire. And the more rural you are, the less likely you are to run across anyone at all with any capability of helping you out of a jam.

The map attached here is from the Congressional Research Service and was released in early 2020, but I doubt it's changed much in any way that would make such a trip safer.

My recommendation: whatever block of time you were going to carve out for this trip, reimagine spending it in Mexico City.
