Don Meat Loaf ... are trying to get me killed again ?
"Water Boy,"
You should consider mongering the region: Quito, Ecuador; take the bus to Cali, Colombia (9 year bus ride;) monger Cali, Colombia.
Hola, Don Loaf -
OK, so I took your advice and walked from Casa 14 to Vale Nada. No problem.
Now, you are telling to me to go to Cali, one of the most violent cities in Colombia ?
Hell no.. I'll back to MGA and walk from Casa 14 to Vale NAda about 100 times instead.

Changing big dollars to dolaritos
. .. As I've noted before, Guajira is no longer taking $100 bills. The owner says no because the bank is giving them grief. I got the manager to change one for me last trip...but I am a regular there and spend a lot of time and $$. They didn't even do it for me easily.David
I almost always had the bank tellers cash my 50 & 100 usd traveler's checks in $5 bills. I'd often have to carry home wads of them.
I can hardly remember how the ATMs there dispensed their cash (or if I even used them more than a couple times). I think that I took 100 - 200 usd in $20 bills from the ATM inside to the teller and had them changed to 5s without any flack. I felt pretty sure they understood how necessary it normally is.
The traveler's checks were not easily cashed at most banks nor without a high fees at tourist cashing places. The EXCEPTION a bank (think it's called Produbanco) on Amazonas at Washington (near the Hilton) or on the 2nd level by the food court at the Quicentro Mall or at the 2nd level at the little plaza/mall at 6 de Deciembre & La Niña with the supermarket in it (near the chongos Guajira, La Niña, & at least one other).
Cultural differences & sex
It seems to me that the poverty in Quito (can't speak for other cities, haven't been there) isn't nearly as bad as say Cartagena. The poverty seems to drive the attitudes of the women. The girls don't want their family to know what they do for a living. The non-hookers don't want to be viewed as a hooker. They don't give it up as quickly probably because their not as desperate and they don't want to look the part. In Colombia, all gloves are off. They do what they have to do to survive. Quito seems to be a much more thriving metropolis compared to Cartagena which is choked by drugs and poverty. Even the taxi drivers between the two cities are different: they are better dressed and more professional in Quito. In Cartagena, many of the taxi drivers double as drug dealers and they seem pretty sleezy. Of course, it's not true of all of them, but seems to be much more prevalent....
 Muy interesante.... I do need to investigate this Columbia place everyone talks so much about. :p
