Only other bar strip is probably Julu lu or just opposite the Hilton. Both are more expensive than TRL (lady drinks in Julu lu are 70RMB) but I have heard things sometimes can get raunchy there.

I think Eddie is somewhat right in the call that it is for newbies, but I would add that last time I have been there it seems to be minimum age of 50 Y.O westerners.

I personally don't know anywhere that you could say is close to TRL in atmosphere and entertainment similarity.

I don't know about Shanghai but I've been told by LE in SZ that it is a real pain in the ass to arrest a foreigner. The paperwork is a nightmare and they often have to deal with foreign embassies getting involved. Most LE would rather avoid it and tend to just send you on your way. I've been in similar situations where I was asked to hide in a BBS or room until the LE moved on. I've also been in BBS areas when raids went down and the LE just asked me to leave the area quickly.

Julu Lu is the TOTAL RIP-OFF centre of Shanghai - yes the attempts to get raunchy there are nothing short of ways to 'drag' the customers in - then 'fleece' them.

You will be pleased then to hear that the Julu Lu bars have now been shut down as they have plans for redevelopment of the area.

I agree very much on TRL not just being for newbies. It is somewhere to have a beer and make a relaxed & often more informed decision on your lady of choice. Of course, there is a need to pay a premium but that is generally the market rule in most countries with China no exception.

Just return from a little afternoon mongering trip. First went to Bao Duo (well I think that's the name but I might have it wrong, well it's on luban lu / xietu lu). The place appears definitely dead: nobody waiting in the street entrance, and they even destroyed the elevator button fur the first floor.
