Yesterday I found a Kasikorn agency that got me a bank account. It's in the Interchange building, next to the Asok sky train station.

I didn't have a work permit, didn't even buy a SIM card yet so no phone number. I gave them my hotel number and address, even though I'm checking out today. No questions were asked. They are very accommodating.

They also have an exchange service with pretty good rates I think. I'm no expert, in any case it was better than the airport where I changed 200 USD on day 1. When you change thousands of USD, good rates make quite a difference. I compared what I would have gotten with the airport rate, and the difference was nearly 8, 000 baths. All that for a seemingly small 3 decimal points difference in buying rate.

Anyway, the whole process (account creation, currency exchange, depositing the money, getting the card, changing the pin) took around 40 mins.

Once you are done in Asok, you are near the MRT exchange, the Asok sky train being connected to Sukhumvit MRT station. You can go from there to the Ratchada soapies, which is exactly what I did. More on that later.

Directions: Take the sky train, exit at Asok station. As you get out, take a look at the major intersection, you should see a big building with 'Interchange' on it. Not to be confused with the 'Exchange' building which is right opposite; Jgm005 mentioned opening a KTB bank account in that building, so you might try that if Kasikorn fails you for whatever reason.

Today is errands day for me before I leave to Samui.

I badly scratched my glasses yesterday and need to change the lenses. I need a place where they can check my eyesight (in a serious, medical fashion, not by some clueless 19 year old sales clerck) and then make quality lenses in an hour or so. I'm leaving BKK tonight so this is urgent, please reply ASAP if you have any recommendation.

Also wouldn't mind getting my teeth whitened. Searching for that here turns up surprisingly little info (and the little there is, is 2-3 years old). Any recommendations?

Day 1.

I arrive in Bangkok around 11 PM from the airport. I'm staying in Hotel Solo, recommended in the hotel thread. It's within 5 mins walking from Nana, my usual hunting ground. The hotel proves to be OK for the price. The wotif deal is gone so I'm paying 2, 200 a night. Not exactly cheap for Thailand. But the room does look fresh and stylish, the beddings are great, it's a classy mid-range place. I'm only supposed to stay one night before moving on to Samui.

One thing to note about Solo: it's not a mongers hotel, though it is girl friendly. There are couples, groups of girls travelling together, etc. These people are in the lobby checking their laptop in the evening. So if you are bit shy to take girls back to your room, keep that in mind.

Anyway, after checking in, I go straight to Nana and go check Rainbow 2. I take a quick decision since it's late, and I go for a little Asian Julia Roberts type (number 59 I think). Bleached hair, very cute face, nice body. She actually looks very much like my favorite girl from my last trip, in the same bar, but it turns out it's not her. Anyway, we go to the short time hotel and take care of business. Quite nicely so. Total damage: 2, 600 baths.

As soon as I'm done with her, I go nurse a beer at Rainbow 4 on the second floor. I love to see all those cute girls dance. Again it's late, around 1AM by now, so I have to take a decision quickly. I invite a girl over, she is hot, but it turns out she has braces, so I politely send her back. I invite another girl over, and the same thing happens; braces! Damn. I send her back as well.

A girl who was dancing in front of me comes down and sits down next to me, uninvited. I'm not too keen on that – I like to choose. She has an awesome tattoo on her back, but otherwise isn't my type. I politely tell her so within 2 mins in order not to waste her time and mine.

I see a third girl I like, and this one doesn't have braces. Game on. Short time hotel. Happy. Total damage: 2, 600 (+300 for hotel).

As her shift is over by the time we are done, I invite her to eat at the little street restaurant outside Nana. We talk. Nice girl. Plans to open a restaurant with her savings. Is careful with her money. She says she earns 160, 000 baths a month. If true, not too shabby.

Your situation is urgent so you may not be able but their prices for me have been somewhat negotiable.

They can delay / hide signs of aging almost anywhere, but that part tells it all. One large wrinkle=less than 25 years old. And then simply add one every three years or so. Accurate to within +-10, and you can make it to 5% with some practice!

First pair 3500BHT next few 2700BHT for high index (high index by Thai standards not American, just a little thicker) and I usually stay for a month so never asked about rush but worth a try.

There is no question that the Bangkok monger landscape is changing. I much prefer the internet for freebies (but that in itself has become a huge pain in the ass given the total unreliability of the average Thai girl) and can't remember the last time I bothered going to a gogo bar. Gogo bars don't even cross my mind anymore. They are just off the radar completely. Shocking attitudes and prices are carzy when you count the all in cost. Best bet is massage parlours by far.

It is easy to say and it is probably true that it is not the scene that has changed but my attitude towards it. But one thing that has DEFINITELY changed in the last 5 years is the "pickiness" of the girls. There is nothing I hate more than the hooker that won't seem to go with anyone no matter who they are. They hang out in the hooker hang outs looking like hookers and then when anyone approaches them (Caucasion Or Asian) they give them a look of disgust! What is with that? That for me has been the change for the worst. The pickiness of the girls and it is getting worse all the time.

Certain places (GoGos, Freelancers hangouts) are known for their girls liking short-dicks and high prices.

If they are avoiding eye contact, then why bother. OTOH if she is really smoking or I'm drunk, then I might try it anyway. In a bar this could be done by offering the lady a drink, either directly or through the waitress.

When I compared costs, it was about 2000bt more in the Sukh area than put by the On Nut BTS area. I can't remember the dentist office name, but be prepared for the full attention of a dentist plus 2 assistants. Professional work at about 2/3 of the cost. Just get out of the tourist zone is my advice. Then again, probably same day or next day service in the tourist zone but I had to wait about week to find an appointment for me. It was strange, the dentist hours worked seemed to be half what they work in the USA.

For the most part if I am not here when my rent is due then it is much easier and cheaper to do a wire transfer to my landlord from a Thai bank versus paying over half the value of my rent in international transfer fees alone. I actually use the same bank that he does. In addition, those 150 baht ATM fees add up when you don't have a Thai bank. Also, I don't have to worry about bringing cash back and forth. I just make one big deposit and it will last me several months.
