Been staying with friends in SpB so haven't mongered much but here is what I have to offer:
(1) Staying with friends sucks. Just get your own apartment. Hotels are expensive.
(2) Staying on one of the islands in the city sucks, the bridges stop working for a few hours every night and that can make it difficult to get to and from the mainland where most of the action is late at night.
The salon scene is definitely not designed for foreigners and it can be difficult to locate places and get in the door if you don't speak Russian. I did go to two salons:

My experience is that there are the same number of girls working at the Salon throughout the week but less customers on the weekdays so more of the girls are likely to be "available" when you arrive.
