budget traveler's can pre-book your transfers through the bell transport company and carry the print out to their desk at level 1, gate no. 8. they have recently hiked up their fares to baht 250 (previously 200). they allow 1 piece luggage with the maximum weight of 20 kg. additional luggage is another 50 baht / piece. booking online will guarantee you a seat on the bus (in case its full) for the time slot you desire and save you a 20 baht. the schedule is 8, 10, 12, 2.4 and 6 pm. these guys are suckers at times and can make you wait for the next bus, so insist and show that you have the booking. being a sole traveler, this option does suit me and i used it for my travel from pattaya to bangkok as well. if you are a group of 3-4 makes more sense getting a taxi reserved, they do the same for around 1200 baht.

you are spoilt for choice and by price. one question you can ask is the time of the year you are visiting and if you plan to rent a bike. my first trip i stayed near pattayaklang or central pattaya road, which can be roughly taken as the half way mark. after my initial study realising that there is not much of activity apart from rasputin and the drinking street near soi 1 and 2. this area is much greener and spaced out though but the same space can be scary when walking unescorted at night. my second trip shifted somewhere half way between pattaya klang and south pattaya road. this keeps you equidistant to the gogo's on walking street and the beer bars on soi8. and very near to the other action area soi lk metro and soi buakhao. my third trip (based on trip advisor recommendations) landed me a stone's throw from walking street, ideal for late night surveys of the nightclub and late take outs.

If by "stamping" you mean "getting a Visa", perhaps you are forgetting that it costs money, about $60, requires passport pictures, and that one goes to a local embassy or consulate, or mail-in passport (not all countries allow that) , with all the associated expense and inconvenience.
Then in any case, the line at immigration is exactly the same for both Visa and non-Visa holders. Only Thai citizens have a separate line.
