Bogota Reports

I'd advise every tourist never to walk around with their passport. Only comes out for official business, i.e. air travel, military roadstops, in-branch banking, cellular phone offices, etc., then goes right back into a secure location/compartment. A clear passport copy should suffice any other situation, along with a driver's license.

I'd call local police on it if they insist on the actual passport.

You'd be much much better off losing a driver's license abroad, than having to go thru the dry assfuck of obtaining another passport at the US Embassy in Bogota.

Don't carry your passport. If you lose it, it could be quite a nightmare of a situation. Especially do NOT carry your passport if you're vacationing outside of Bogota. Should you lose it, I think your only recourse is the U.S. embassy in Bogota.

Make 2 laminated copies of your passport and always carry one of them with you. Leave your passport in your safe or hidden/secured somewhere in your room / apartment.

I saw the Post from Novio recomending this place. When arrived I was surprised to see the small massage parlor. If you go to abejitas or one relax they are huge in comparison. The locale only has one light, therefore the division beetween the 2 massages beds is made by a walll that does not touch the ceiling, so everything can be heared.

There were 4 girls. Natalia, Daniela, Marisela and Bridget. I was looking for bridget but she was bussy with another client.

So I chose Daniela a Very cute lil spinner. Lovelly face, She is about 5 foot tall nice perky tits, a cute tight ass. I payed 60k for massage and FS. The massage was so, so. The session was nice. Not me, but a couple of people I know. YES watch your drink. And don't be fooled that it's just in Bogota. It's all over Colombia and has been used in neighboring nations too.

In general, Bogota is quite a bit safer than Medellin and MUCH safer than Cali but it's still not Disneyland.

Whilst out mongering, no. But ffs watch your drinks in bars: they should be served out of sealed bottles and NEVER left unattended, even when you go to the can.

The problem is reputed to get worse in the run up to xmas as economic pressure grows on the poor to respond to advertiser's demands.

(50% of cases in emergency rooms? I don't believe that for a moment.)

one girl even admitted to me that she did this to two guys and was able to score quite a bit off of both. the bouncers at the club were in on the take and gave her the heads up.

my brother's colleague's son and d'-in-law went on honeymoon to guadalajara. both mature 25 year olds with some spanish ability. they decided to take in some local culture and so went off the beaten path to some local cantina and both got scoped. the criminals made an incision under the boy's arm and bled him out a predetermined amount in order to incapacitate him.

the old man gets a call from some people in mexico telling him that they "found" his boy and that they want to "help" but that it will cost $25,000 to do so. before it was all over and the boy and girl were home the final amount paid was $30,000. besides the psychological scars that both must carry, the criminals nicked a nerve when they made the incision so he has some permanent nerve damage manifested in his lower arm & hand.

i don't know all the details and like most experienced latin america travelers i was skeptical of the circumstances but still, it happened.

i also remember a post on this forum from a dude who related the story of how he got scoped in a bar in san diego, ca. he said it was by some overly friendly girls and that he was wearing an expensive rolex. luckily, his girlfriend went looking for him and found him before anything really bad happened.

moral of the story: be on guard for it anywhere. drink soda or beer from bottles. don't let drinks out of your sight. especially when alone or with unknowns.

Gentlemen,

I have an 11.5 hour layover in BOG from 10 a.m. to 9:25 p.m. I have not been to Colombia, but I'd like to get out and have a quick sampling of what Colombia has to offer. After researching the boards, I've found that I should have enough time to do this given my layover, and that this is relatively common.

My questions are these:

1) Will I have to bring all of my luggage with me, or can I check my checked luggage before heading out?

2) I would like to session with one chica and have dinner at a nice restaurant during my time there. Can anyone recommend where I should go? (It's in the middle of the week.)

3) Ideally, I would like to find a driver to hang out with me that afternoon, take me to/from the airport, and to/from wherever I go outside. Any ideas what this will run, and can you recommend anyone?

"I've lost weight since I've been in Colombia. It must be all the drugs," says the American backpacker, loudly, seeming to put special emphasis on the last word to make sure everyone in the Bogota hostel's common room can hear. "That, and the sex."

"2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate? Cocaine!" retorts his new-found English compadre, much to the bafflement of onlookers.

It's 6pm on a Saturday and the pair, with a Swede in tow, are getting ready to go out into Bogata and score. Five minutes ago, it was a hostel scene like any other the world over: travellers congregating to eat dinner, swap tips, catch up on emails. Now it's taken a surreal turn and become Nathan Barley does Colombia.

It's hardly shocking that some travellers in Colombia can't resist trying the country's most famous product, but it seems the drug is becoming a tourist attraction in itself. Just as you try steak in Argentina and caipirinhas in Brazil; in Colombia, you sample the coke.

Backpackers are doing lines in their dorms, signing up to visit cocaine factories, and word is going round that somewhere in San Augustin lies a place where you can make your own. Meanwhile, the six-day trek to the Ciudad Perdida (one of the country's most talked about trips) often includes a photo stop at a "cocaine factory". It may be little more than a table, set up for the benefit of tourists, but that, in itself, seems to further distance travellers from the serious reality of the country's problems.

"It was hilarious," one Mancunian backpacker said after his visit to the makeshift factory. "Just like Blue Peter. I kept expecting them to say, 'Here's one we made earlier'." After the demonstration of the initial pulping process, the group had a chance to smoke the drug. "It wasn't great stuff," he said, "but you could feel it."

A few years ago, only the most intrepid travellers would add Colombia to their South American itinerary; now it's the most talked about destination on the continent. Most visits to Colombia are, as the Foreign Office says, trouble-free. Most are drug-free, too, except perhaps for the caffeine in the spectacular Zona Cafetera region, or perhaps a shot of local firewater, Aguardiente, in the hip bars and restaurants of Bogota or Medellin.

However, for a growing minority, it's the country's dangerous reputation that has become the attraction, with these travellers seeming intent on pushing boundaries to get good stories to email home. ("The FARC are nearby? Cool!" I heard an Irish backpacker say.)

German Escobar (presumably no relation to the country's infamous late druglord) has run a hostel in Bogota for 15 years. The homepage of his website features a prominent plea asking travellers not to do drugs in his home country and to be aware of the trouble they are causing. ("If not for your own well-being, we would encourage you to refrain from supporting violence against the Colombian people by purchasing cocaine.") German says this generally filters out the biggest users, the majority of travellers are respectful and he loves his job, but he has still seen his fair share of problems over the years.

"The type of traveller coming to Colombia is changing," he says. "When we first started, it was like a family. It was a high-risk destination so there was solidarity among travellers. Now, a lot more people are here just to party."

German has some horrifying stories of travellers whose touristic dabblings have turned into something much darker. There was an English girl who became a user and then a dealer, before running up huge debts "with the type of people you don't mess around with". "She came back to visit the hostel one day very high, threatening to kill herself, and I had to wrestle the knife off her in the kitchen," he says. Tragically, at the end of last year, a 22-year-old British male, high on drugs, followed through with his threat.

Blood, drugs and death is exactly the image Colombia is trying to get away from. The government is making a concerted effort to try to clean up its international reputation (with the help of Blur-bassist-turned-cheese-farmer Alex James) and the tourism board has a direct, new slogan, "Colombia: the only risk is wanting to stay".

Unfortunately, try as they might to get people to reassess this beautiful but complicated country, some backpackers seem intent on making their own risks.[/quote]

You sound as if your stop-over in BOG is for a connecting flight. I would have my checked bags marked for my final destination and then all you are responsible for is your carryon.

I have actually never had a connecting flight in another country. I assumed it was like when you enter the U. S. And you have to pick up your bags and re-check them (a la Miami). This sounds much better.
