All of us have different tastes, priorities and budgets. My strong recommendation for a first timer to MDE is to stay in Poblado. Taxis are cheap. I have couple of favorite places I rent and I have posted them in the Apartment thread. I can PM if you can't find them. Rest of your questions are answered by smarter people than me.

Once I get more confident with my spanish and area maybe on my return trip I will stay in other areas. I'd rather play the safety card first until then. So far I've been on the AIRbnb and looking at some places and I have a couple in mind. Appreciate all the help from you and others. Those who have stayed in the Poblado area, any issues bring home any guests? I'm renting a whole apt by myself so I don't think its an issue but what about the ladies? Do they outcall to this area? How are the neighbors if they see you have a guest? Are the neighbors frowning upon us?

Because of the hills, ravines, twisty roads, and one way streets it can be very confusing to navigate in Poblado. We are in an apartment about 5 blocks up from El Poblado and more than half the taxi drivers have gotten lost going to our place by just its address. I would recommend staying down near El Poblado (the main road) to avoid that problem and also being within walking distance of Parque Lleras where there are lots of restaurants, shops, etc.

It is our first time here so I can't compare against other regions but we have been happy in Poblado.

I got a huge chuckle from this question! If you're staying in an Apt in an upper class building, depending on who your neighbor is, I'd have to say YES, I have received the Colombian version of "stink eye"on more than one occasion while riding in the elevator with my hooker.

Try to rent from Bbrocs, the owner of Poblado Rentals. He owns his buildings (some of them), so there are not any problems with the neighbors. He will let you know which of his properties are ok to cut loose in, and which ones you have to act a bit more conservative.

[/i][/QUOTE]I see quite a bit of discussion about safety on the street, and in clubs. What is reported by innuendo is a real potential reality. I'm often concerned about the first-time visitors to Medellin that knows nothing about the city, the conditions in Colombia, and often times little or no Spanish. They want to start this virgin adventure in an apartment by themselves? That's why I strongly advocate that the first-time visitor consider staying at the mansion where there is almost always seasoned veterans, and substantial vetting of the girls that come there.

Medellin is filled with very desperate people, and some of them are beautiful young women. Life is not risk-free. But you've got to realize that every gringo is a potential target, whether from a novio that's in on a robbery, a crooked cop, or the fake cop.

I thinking about mixing things up and doing 5-7 days in Lima before heading to MDE. Is it worth my precious vacation time? I've been to Peru once before, but I didn't spend much time in Lima before heading to Cusco and Macchu Picchu. I didn't notice the Peru women to be as hot as those in Colombia. But I'm thinking in a City the size of Lima, there has to be some good ones. Looking for comments on how worthwhile Lima is for mongering.
