Next month I will be travelling through Rodoviária Novo Rio on my way from Paraty to Copacabana. At this bus station I will transfer from the Paraty bus to bus #126 bound for Copa. I will arrive at this transfer point around 9PM. How safe is this area after dark? I will be carrying a few things (e.g backpack with camera) that might attract thieves. Would it be wiser to take a cab to Copa?

Instead of a taxi you can take the frescão, Real Bus, just outside the rodoviária.
The regular city bus might not be safe that late in the evening, considering you are carrying luggage.
Has anyone taken an interstate bus out of Foz? I have a question, is there a border or customs check on the highway out of Foz?
The reason I ask is that by Air they basically scan your luggage upon entering the departure area of the airport for people with more than their $300 allowable duty free allowance. They are getting more and more thorough with their searches now, kind of really getting to be a pain in the ass. The airline staff also check you passport for a valid visa stamp, actually they only check to see if you have the entry paper stamped. Hence I was wondering that a bus may be a better option for my twice yearly shopping trip to the border area. However was wondering if there is a check on the highway as well to check the buses going north? I was thinking maybe catch a bus to Curitiba and then air to Rio if there is a less intrusive border check via road.

According to various news reports the aircrew asked the marshalls to intervene. According to the article 2 different sources confirmed the arrested lady "bit" one of the marshalls. I really can't see what your point is?
Please also explain the merits of a legal system which arrests 2 airmarshalls in this instance?

And yes, I do agree that the air marshals were wronged. They will have no problems getting new passports once back in the US. Focus man, focus. Need to refocus on getting the updated version of your esteemed guide. Waiting eagerly for it. Leave these unimportant matters to us mortals.

The air marshalls are not judge, jury and executioner. The federal judge was perfectly within his rights to ask for an investigation. The Marshalls have no legal power to arrest a passenger in Brazilian territory as a Brazilian agent would have no right to arrest an American in the USA.
The marshalls would have had top level consular support, so why flee? What bothers me is that the escape plan was ready and executed very smoothly.

The first part of your argument is not correct. They did not arrest the person in Brazilian Territory. They arrested her in International Airspace on an American plane, this falls under American law until the plane lands. Upon landing they then turned her over to the Federal Brazilian Police upon arrival. This is standard legal procedure as per the various legal treaties that Brazil has signed. According to the various news articles that reported the happenings, the marshalls followed legal procedure to the letter. Whether you agree with Marshalls or not is not really relevant to this argument.
As to why they chose to leave the country? . Brazil has proven time and time again that they do not have a fair and just legal system. I would do the same thing if I was in the same situation. Luckily the Brazilian legal/immigration system is so inffecient it would be easy to flee the country without a problem. Nobody would want to stick around because Brazil does not respect international laws. Even if you ask your average Brazilian, they are embarassed by their corrupt legal system and scared of their own police.
Look up the David Goldman case, pure example of how a Brazilian with influence can make their own laws.

This goes for any situation that involves you in the Brazilian legal system. If you have the option to run, best take that option. As a gringo your chances of a fair crack of the whip are definitely against you. Non existent, if going up against a Brazilian with connections. The general phychy of the population at all levels does not expect fair play.

Two pins european will work and taking a two flat oins (USA) adaptor will sort out if soemwhere they are on US sockets
In most cases the socket is dual: two pins euro/USA
