I was more than half serious about Tom Emmer earlier though. If Emmer, along with other moderate Republicans and Democrats had come to some kind of understanding that would have gotten him elected, I believe it probably would have been a good outcome for America. I think Emmer would perform like McCarthy. While I agree with Mike Johnson about spending, he's out of step with the majority of America on social issues. What he said in an interview with Hannity the other evening though doesn't look too bad from my perspective:

This war can go on forever if Zelensky and others continue with the aim to recapture every square inch of land formerly held by Ukraine, including Crimea, before negotiating an end to the conflict. Based on polls, before 2022 the majority in Crimea and Russian occupied Donbas wanted to be part of Russia.

That's not to say that we shouldn't have provided support to Ukraine last year, given that Russia was driving towards Kiev and Kharkiv. But another $60 billion to Ukraine with no strings attached, which is what Biden's proposing, doesn't make sense to me.

And I agree with you and Johnson about spending. I do think that McCarthy did a great job when he was speaker in the spending department. Back in May the Republicans managed to claw back $1. 5 trillion out of the $5+ trillion in unfunded spending legislated by Democrats in 2021 and 2022. I don't think Johnson will be able to do a better job than McCarthy in that respect, and he's a potential liability come election time. However if he maintains a low profile and governs in accordance with the consensus of the Republican caucus, I don't think he'll hurt Republicans in 2024. He's probably not going to be as good at fundraising as McCarthy.
