I was shaken and had to go out for a drink to calm down, scared that the police might burst into my room. Of course they didn't!

Why are some of us seasoned travellers occasionally so guillible? I cannot even offer the excuse 'I was inebriated' because I wasn't!

Needless to say, Makati and Club Havana no longer feature on my list of 'must dos'.

I feel like you and I share the same mentality! I lived in the PI for a short time and took advantage of the police's ability to grease the wheels. I was in a taxi a couple years back and the driver tried to take advantage of me to the tune of 1000 pesos. We had agreed upon 250. To make a long story short, we stopped at my hotel and he demanded I pay 1500 pesos. So, I flagged down a policeman told him my story. Then I pulled him aside and handed him the 1000 pesos and to make the driver go away. Deal done, dickhead driver gone.

Honestly, I couldn't quite figure out if the police were angling me for money, but in the end we all agreed that it would be best not to make a formal report, because her cross complaint that I was engaging her services would be a hassle to deal with. Yes, I wanted to get her punished, but not if I had to call my attorney at 1 in the morning to sort this thing out. They assured me that she would spend the night in jail. And he also told me that they gave her a good whack. I mentioned that I would pay for their "investigative time", they said ok. I offered a 1, 000P, and they just said up to me. If they were angling for money, they could have easily gotten more out of me, but that did not seem to be the case. That is a really good thing, because it would be scary to think that by calling the police to report a crime, I would have to pay them money to avoid having charges filed against me. Fortunately, the police are corrupt, but they aren't that bad. Anyway, I exchanged cell numbers with the sergent who told me just to call him directly if I had a problem in Makati, and he would take care of me. Also, it was important to let this bakla know she picked the wrong dude to fuck with. I won't go into the details about what she went through, but she was certainly crying, very stressed out, and said, with tears streaming down her eyes "yes, everything is ok for you but how about me". Now, maybe I am a hartless SOB, but that wasn't enough. Not only had she forced her way into my car and stole my wallet, but she made up this story, causing me problems. So I explained to the officer that it would really make me feal good to see her whacked with the batton. And they obliged! Really a trip whatching the police whack someone at my command. I LOVE the Philippines.

So, I never got the 2, 000P that she stole from me (it disappeared, but I am quite sure she didn't get it), so I was out a total of 3, 000P, but I am quite happey with the deal. She certainly didn't get away with it, and I got the cell number of local policeman that I am quite sure will take care of any problem I might have for the right amount of money.

So the advice I can give you guys.

1) Don't be afraid to call the police, but keep in mind, justice out here cost's money. As long as you pay, you will get the best justice in the world that money can buy.

2) Don't carry too much money in your wallet. It is not unusual for me to have 20, 000P on me, but luckily today was not one of them. In the future, I will not carry more than I need.

3) If you have a car, be carefull of your surroundings before getting in. Open the door with the key to avoid opening all the doors with the remote.

4) If you sense that you are going to get into a struggle with someone, protect your wallet.

Also, I have been living out here 2 1/2 years and go the various red light districts (burgoss, EDSA complex, Malate/Ermita, and even the relatively rough airport district) quite regularly. This is the first problem I have ever had. So, don't think that this place is dangerous, because this type of story is not common.

Long time I wanted to report on this. Did not find the time.

It was a long time I had not stayed in Manila alone and for longer than a few days.

This time, a few weeks back, managed to stay one week all and all. Stayed in Ortigas, Linden Suites, nice 1BR kind of Appartment. Food average, restaurant a bit gloomy but ultra clean, very nice if not always efficient staff. All and all never disappointed.

Here are some hints:

- DAY 1: arrived late at night, check in 11. 30PM, straight to burgos. Based on reports from friends, went to high heels, located in the upper part of burgos street, right after the "boxing" place. I went back to Burgos. Of course. After so many Long ISland Ice Teas and cigars and a small joint in his car, I did not need not was able to think much. I did something I would not normally do. To cut it short, overall a very nice stay. A few reminders:

- freebies can be had easily. Nice girls, who will or not expect a little money (it is always a little, even 2 000 PHP is only 30€ or 40US$. Most of us here earn that in one hour or less. I am not a bad looking guy, I am 44, 1. 83cm, 87Kg, but no model picture. And still I managed, with soft words and a little knowledge of the language. Not compulsory anyway. To get two cutties in bed. 100% ratio. Filipinas love sex, and also love the prospect of you being potentially a husband. They see the sex as some kind of test ride. And since they love it, well then they take the best out of it. And give it to you as well. There are still 10 or so that I chat from time to time from Filipinaheart. I did not contact them because of time and pressure. I will next time. Maybe. I prefer filipinaheart to cherryblossoms. Don't know why. Anyway the investment is small, and the rewards are big.

- I bring freebies to motels, Wgs to my room. Security measure. Don't want to risk the following: Freebie wants more, comes to hotel, makes scandal.

- regarding hotels, I recommend personnally the appartment style (Linden, Oxford, Oakwood (more expensive in Makati). Rooms are bigger than the regular hotels, it helps if you don't have to fix your stuff every 5 minutes, especially if you stay long, they go cheap (80€) at least in my standards. Of course, it can be a pain to go around if you stay in Ortigas. But I think traffic is better now there. And if you chose the right hours, it is ok. And I personnally like to be in a cab at night and observe the people in the streets.

- lady drinks, girls and mamasan pressure, can be dealt with in bars. Smile. It is also a nice way to start enjoying the company of the girls, feel how they are, try and imagine and/or ask what they will be up to. And well they promise, and give. Massage places are the place to go for a quickie. My two experiences were really nice. It is I think always advisable to follow the mamasan's advice. A little tip will help, especially if you think you are going to come back.

- I personnally prefer the scene in burgos, even if the prices are higher. The whole EDSA concept is like a bit too much for me. But that is a taste thing. I prefer shopping in boutiques than malls. I guess the same applies here.

I see from an earlier brothers report he mentions American time vs Philippine time. I worked in Manila for 5 years and have to say my staff were ALWAY and I mean always on time. It's been over a month since there has been a post on this thread.......

I love Burgos street and have posted some info on it previously. I typically go later in the evening and head straight to Flamingo's.

Can anyone recommend a bar (outside) beer place where you can sit and watch the action at the finer places? I'd love to find a perch to take in the sites and watch the girls either coming to work or just taking in the sites.
