Soi Cowboy - The real circus
I have had the opportunity to go to Soi Cowboy a couple times in the last few weeks to show first time Bangkok visitors the sights. Last night there were two elephants with their handlers walking up and down. One was pretty big and getting tusks while the other was younger. They are there so you can buy sugar cane and feed them while taking pictures. I feel sorry for the poor animals but it is a sight to see. At various stalls up and down the street you can find anything from fried scorpions to squid jerky. They sell just about anything that walked the earth. Ok maybe a bit of an exaggeration but you can definitely get a lot of different foods and some smell really good. There are usually also people walking up and down selling toys and stuffed animals, just like you find at the circus. There are also beggars looking for hand outs. One in particular who is missing a leg will slide up and down the street on his stomach with a sign asking for money, others just come up and ask or show you a sign.
Now one thing that you can't help but notice is the woman, young, older and old walking around in various states of dress. No one is nude or topless on the street, though some of the costumes leave little to the imagination.
