Since new visitors arrive here every day, thought I would address the "Clip Joints" in the Lido area (near Leme) in Copacabana.
I have spent time in almost all of them. Just like with the prives in Centro and even in Copa, you can find some gems. One the way back to my apartment I faked an illness and called off the date. Get to know the owner or manager. People have mentioned how Ivan at Monte Carlo has helped them. Same thing except Ivan speaks very good English, these guys usually won't.

At a hotel, they usually will ask for ID and keep it until they have contacted you and you say it is OK for the girl to leave. Most doormen would not get involved in your business so even if there was security you might still have a problem, in fact, the "cousins" might drop a few Reais on the doorman to find out when you come and go. As for what to do now; how long are you going to be in Rio? If it is awhile, and you are constantly checking over your shoulder, you could ask your friend to see if he can rent his place to someone else and you move to another apartment.
Now for other new guys: If you are staying at a hotel that is guest friendly, take your date by reception to check her in. They will take her Identification, which is important in Brazil, and only return it once you give the OK. If you are in an apartment, get to know the doorman. Bring them an açaí or sandwich. They may not get involved in a temporary renter's business, but they will help out a friend. If a situation like SoCal's occurs, stay calm and call for the doorman. He may come to the apartment or at least talk to her.
One time I brought back a girl from Help. She spent the night and the next day wanted to go with me for groceries. She had decided she liked being with me so much she was moving in. A very good and important advice from ET.
Nowadays I always stay in a favela and I have no porteiro. Before that during 20+ years I always stayed in apartments. Usually in the same building, very close to Help. It was a large building, 2 portarias and lots of porteiros. I learnt the names of all the porteiros and became a friend with the chefe dos porteiros. The chefe dos porteiros was responsible for renting the apartments in the building and always made me very good discounts. I made it a habit always to chat with the porteiros.
