Hope you can help.[/QUOTE]If you're not going to have a vehicle at your disposal I'd advise somewhere like Newmarket, Greenlane or Penrose which seems to fit your criteria and is on the (only) railway line. Plenty of motels in Greenlane a short walk from the station there.

Just be aware we don't have the best public transport system in the world - the last train out of the city from the Britomart train station (adjacent to what passes as our RDL) is at midnight Friday & Saturday. I think the buses run a little later though.
