I’m pretty excited about an MP discovery I made yesterday. Last week I was in a taxi crawling through traffic on Pyramids Road in Giza, when I noticed a creatively-spelled name on a sign outside a third-floor apartment window: “Goudy Jam.” The pictures of people exercising confirmed the intent of the butchered spelling. For a foreigner, I think the cost savings of the Metro would not be outweigh the convenience of taking a meter taxi from say Tahrir Square to Nervana, which would cost around LE25-30. Just try to learn a basic Arabic greeting and the Arabic words for your destination (i.e., Naadi Nervana fi Sharia Haram). Also, sometimes the more seemingly roundabout route is the better one; recently a taxi driver turned around after a few minutes driving on Pyramids Road and took us on the Ring Road to get to Agouza. I was skeptical and thought he was driving up the fare until I realized that the much lighter traffic on the Ring Road vs. Pyramids Road that night was the superior route choice.
