Wolfpacks generally follow sheep to pick off the weak and slow from the herd so the rateros do likewise and go IMO for the herd of tourists that show up on Friday and Saturdays to get drunk and walk around Tijuana. I got a ratero pack attack a few years ago on a Friday evening in across the street from Malqueridas but I wasn't drunk and was going to a local restaurant by the hotel there. Felt safe because the street was full and was well lighted. Luckily they were unable to find my wallet and took my coin purse with about $10 worth of change. From my experience, they wait for victims by standing by the sidewalk, usually in doorways for you to go by. One will get you by the neck from behind to choke you out, one will grab your legs and the 3rd will search your pants for your wallet. Once they have your wallet or coin purse, they will run off. Best to carry a coin purse with some change because they are unlikely to leave you alone till they find some money on you so they can buy drugs for their fix. None of the locals will help you or see anything. . . If you want to be safe, stay in your hotel when it gets dark and do not carry anything worth much on you if you do. Old 2 d hand cell phone prepaid, coin purse with a few bucks, no watch or jewelry etc.
But what if you're a wolf too or maybe even a lion?
