Sosua report for newbies by a newbie
I had my first trip to DR on Sept 28th to Oct 2nd. I am going to post some stuff that would help mostly newbies like me because although I did RTFF, you have to go through many pages to piece together some good info. If there was a sticky post in each forum about the basics that most newbies will do, I think it will help a lot. (Top monger hotels with approximate price range, top 3 or 4 monger spots and average prices, where to exchange money, what to look out for, some decent restaurants & bars)
I spent $459 USD for a direct flight from Jet Blue. The taxi is a flat rate of $25 USD from Puerto Plata airport to Sosua. Some hotels will arrange for you to be picked up for $20USD. I stayed at the Plaza Europa Hotel. It cost me $145 USD in cash for 4 nights. The place is not the Hilton, but it had a pool, Jacuzzi, A / C, WiFi, electronic safe, flat panel tv with cable and porn channels. My room had 2 queens size beds. 2 bathrooms, and an extra room with a fridge, oven, microwave and was girl friendly. I thought it was perfectly fine although I couldn't get a strong enough wifi signal to get online. The hotel has a computer in the lobby that you can use.
The hotel is on the main street Calle Pedro Clisante which is where all the action is.
There are basically 2 places where you want to go. Passions, which is about 3 blocks to the left coming out of Plaza Europa, and Classic 59 which is about 4 or 5 blocks to the right coming out of Plaza Europa.
Passions: This is a place that has two large bars and a bunch or girls employed by the bar. There are rooms in the back to take them. The rooms have nice beds, showers and A / C. The bar does not have A / C. You can take a girl to the room for an hour for 2500 pesos which is about $64 USD ($1 USD is about 39 pesos). I took a short girl with glasses named Katie and another girl named Laya. Both were very good and I had no complaints. There is also an option to take them out for the night. Obviously the price is higher the earlier you take them out. I think it costs as much as 7500 pesos if you take them from noon to 10am the next day, and as little as 2500 pesos if you take them out from 1 am to 10am the next day. There are about 30 girls there from what I saw. Drinks are regularly priced (Presidente is 100 pesos).
Classic 59 and the surrounding bars: Classic 59 is a club just like HELP in Rio was where most of the men are mongers and most of the women are freelance workers. It cost 200 pesos to get in. I took a girl out of there for short time. She was a thin fake blonde named Reny. She asked for 2500 pesos. I offered 1500 and settled on 2000 pesos. She was cool and a good performer. Classic 59 is upstairs from a big open air bar with no windows or doors. I forget the name of it, but there are a bunch of these type of bars within 1 to 2 blocks of Classic 59. All of these bars and the streets around them are the stomping grounds for all the freelance workers.
Across the street from Classic 59 is a bar / restaurant called Britannia which has a good bacon / eggs / pancakes kind of breakfast. Across the street from Britannia is another good breakfast place. Also about two doors down from Britannia towards the beach is a good pizza place.
The beach is about 3 blocks past Classic 59 taking the left road where the streets split. The beach is cool and you can rent chairs and umbrellas for like 100 pesos, plus the guy will also get you food or drinks from the little restaurants on the beach. The water is very nice and clear and there are trees and coconut trees on the beach to get extra shade if you want it.
Changing money can be done at a lot of places and they give pretty decent rates. I think I got like 39 pesos per dollar when the official rate was like $1USD= 39. 22 pesos. There are also some ATMs and they have armed guards in front of them for your safety.
As for safety, it seemed pretty safe even late at night. That was only on the main street. I did not go into the side streets late at night. My hotel had a guard with a shotgun in front all night so I guess it is not exactly safe, but if you're a monger you probably already know the rules of not flashing cash or jewelry or not making yourself an attractive target.
Practically every guy on a motorcycle is a taxi. You can ride on them for very cheap like 50 pesos or so depending how far you need to go.
All in all, I would say Sosua is a good mongering spot with a good variety of girls, with good attitudes for ½ to 1/3 the price of Rio. With the added bonus of being about a 3 hour flight from NYC I can see why so many people from NYC make it their top mongering destination. I'm sure I'll be back for one or two quick trips a year.
