Quito

In Quito, I believe most pain killers, opiates and tranquilizers require a prescription. I tried to buy some Valium for my girlfriend and was turned down everywhere I tried.

On the other hand, blood pressure medication or Lipitor statins can be purchased easily without a prescription.

I think a general rule is if it gets you high and has street value, you will need a prescription. Same in Mexico and Argentina, although at times you can get someone to cut you a deal for some $$ . . .

This is based on my limited experience in Quito.

It's pretty sad when it's more difficult/impossible to get drugs for legit reasons than the other stuff. I have no problem greasing palms if necessary. I will have plenty of medical documentation with me to support my injury. In SJ, Costa Rica I was able to get a generic Norvasc (blood pressure) over the counter. Probably the proximity to Colombia doesn't help any.

Anyone have any idea what a typical fare would be from Quito to the Galapagos Islands? How long does it take to get there in the air? I'm looking for unique stuff to do this trip. I want to get out of Quito some.

About 380 USD from Quito, including stopover in Guayaquil (always) about 2-2.5 hours.

If you want to REALLY see Galapagos you need to book a 3, 4 or 7 day tour on a yacht or cruiser which takes you between the islands, lands on 1-2 island every day and has guides on board. This will cost between 400-2,000 per person.

Have fun it is worth EVERY penny, Not like some of the other hobbies we discuss here...

If you take the yacht route you will never spend time in the inhabited parts of the islands, then you will most certainly have to bring your own.

I was there in a family circumstances so could not even do an inspection, but I'd bet there would be some chongos on shore, if you choose to sleep in the hotels and do your own tour plan (not take the yachts).

It is hard to believe but some things in Ecuador are worth visiting even without the PfP scene. Few thing.

I'd be bored if I had no chicks there and/or didn't bring my own. If I had someone, I'd get more out of a tour.

I wonder if it's possible to have an open-leg in Guayaquil so I could check that place out too. It's too far over land to make it worthwhile.

The forums here don't make it sound like there's much action to be had there.

Generally speaking, all internal flights in Ecuador are one way, so don’t worry about the "open leg" issue. Just buy a ticket from/to wherever you wish to travel. (If you were thinking that you could have a couple days layover in Guayaquil without buying another ticket, I don't think that's possible).

Also, you don’t need to make a reservation too far in advance. However, the two big exceptions to this rule are 1) Galapagos and 2) Carnaval, which is Feb 2-5 this year. Try not to move around too much during this long Carnaval weekend, it will be a hassle.

Therefore, you should book your Quito-Galapagos ticket and your Galapagos-Guayaquil ticket in advance, but don’t worry about Guayaquil-Quito until you’re ready to depart Guayaquil. There are lots of flights and you can likely buy on the day of your travel and no more than one day before.

I am getting in Jan 25 on the 10:30 COPA. I will stay in a local hotel for a night or two before moving over to my usual hostel/apartment.

Anyone else going to be in town?

Although i have no first-hand info, i'm confident there is action in Puerto Ayora. A year ago in Guayaquil i met one working girl who was leaving the next week to go there and another who had "worked" there previously. They both told me there were cheap pool halls in which chicas served drinks and could be taken to back rooms. They told me prices were $12-20 for a half hour. Hope this helps...

I agree - especially the Galapagos. But IMO, Ecuador has a shitload of stuff to offer - whether it is cultural or nature. If you go to Galapagos - don't screw up your schedule based on P4P. If you have a chance to be in Puerto Ayora (most boat tours include one night at least) you can hit some bars (I recommend Limon bar) and try to nail some tourist chicks. I think Galapagos are too amazing to be worried about *****s while you are there. Trust me - I've been there 3 times.

Thanks for the info. I guess I should stay put until after Feb 5 so I don't compete for rooms. Is Carnival throughout Ecuador? or just one place? where?

I keep it simple sometimes and just go to the park with the GFE. Will be tougher this time though because I'm nursing a recovering leg from a break. I'm just happy to get out of the US. I can't really drink this time because can't chance a fall. Imagine all the $$ i'll save. Liquor is usually my biggest expense on these trips.
