Personally I feel that the number of foreigner tourists in Medellin is already too high. I don't like to see so many gringo faces in Poblado, often accompanied by beautiful girls. Yesterday I have seen a Japanese or Korean with his wife and small baby. And, worst of all, today on the Ciclovia I crossed 4 INDIANS (yes, from India!). Wait few years, and the place will be spoiled.
I am NOT going to spend a single word to explain that Medellin is safer than Detroit, or that Poblado is safe like Shanghai, to change the mind of anyone convinced that Medellin is dangerous. To everyone its own. Especially, I don't see the point to attract people of Shanghai to Medellin.

The explosion injured or killed poor homeless people in a rehab center in the early hours of the morning. It's highely unlikely that anyone reading this may be in that place on that time.

BOGOTA, March 22 (Xinhua). Colombia's police director Rodolfo Palomino confirmed on Saturday that a bomb blast killed four people, and injured other 14, outside a homeless shelter and drug rehabilitation center of the country's northeastern Medellin city.

Palomino condemned the attack, where six policemen are among the inured, and offered a reward of 20 million Colombian pesos (10, 000 USA dollars) to anyone who provides information leading to the capture of those held responsible for the attack, Colombia's Caracol Radio network reported.

Deputy Mayor of Medellin, Luis Fernando Suarez, reported that a homeless man was carrying the explosives in a bag that was activated by phone.

"It exploded at the door and he died in that place, other three died in hospitals in Medellin and it also left six policemen injured and others wounded," Suarez said.

Suarez said that the attack was directed against the actions carried out by the Mayor's office and the Metropolitan Police of Medellin to crack down on the use of drugs among homeless people.

The official claimed those behind the attack are drug dealers who oppose the new program for the homeless who are consuming drugs to receive medical and psychological treatment in the center, among others.

The Mayor office of Medellin had strengthened the program two months ago in cooperation with the police, authorities in charge of transporting the people living in the street to these shelters.

I've already seen this online. I was asking if anyone knew the exact location of where it happened like a carerra or avenue. As someone who goes to MDE I'd like to know if I've been in that area.

Thanks Again.[/QUOTE]The article I linked (which you must be able to see) says only that it is on De Greiff, that is, yes you have been nearby, but not at 4am, I assume.

Hello Gents,

It's unfortunate that any loss of life takes place anywhere in the world. But just as the newspapers and tv news has a place for breaking news and ongoing investigations, I believe this matter and any like it should likewise be put in place.

Upon saying that, I do want to say that the blast that occurred in the Avenue De Greiff followed after a riot that occured in the same area on Thursday March 21st. It seem the Mayor has had the police rounding up the homeless in El Centro in attempt to rid them of the streets.

This picture link below shows the corner street name. I can make out Carrera 11 but the Calle is not clear, looks like a 5, 6 or 8. But that should pretty much narrow down where this occurred in the De Greiff area.

The centro is a huge drug den if this goes on longer there could be several more repercussions. Just look what happened when they tried to oust the street vendors.

You quote Paisas, Medellin Paisa and offer advice like you were born in el centro. To say that Medellin is not dangerous is a joke. Yes, generally if you stay in poblado you'll be fine but its a false sense of security. The price of human life is less than 3k. There is no 911 and goid luck getting help in the hillside barrios at night. I am sure in your single visit you were able to see everything and probably could offer advice to colombians.

No doubt Medellin is overall still a pretty dangerous city, but how many of us are going into the hillside barrios at night? Most guys just hang out in Poblado, which is generally quite safe. They may not get a taste of the "real Medellin," but I don't think they care!

If you watch The Wire you probably remember where they asked "how do you make a murder disappear?" Well that is exactly what is happening in many places. And real displacement (not death) is also a huge issue. Again though, these are extremely unlikely to happen to a tourist or a person of any wealth.

I heard the bomb blast and there was a small explosion in a park a couple weeks ago (no one was hurt, not sure what happened exactly). There has been some violence related to the paros at the University also. The whole way the campuses are governed is fucked here, really. My girlfriend was a student at U de A, she is trying hard to transfer to la Nacional or, failing that, she got into a private university. The place is just a disaster. Again though these are not things that are likely to affect a visitor.

As a visitor you're getting the surface level, maybe one or two below that if you really hang around. Keep your eyes open but there's no need for paranoia or doubt about coming.
